TTS Starter kick back
« on: April 07, 2010, 02:46:02 PM »

I have installed the TTS.pipes and fullsac on four bikes and have had only one problem and it's with my 09 SERG when starting. The clutch basket and starter have already been replaced by the dealer because a tooth broke and lodged in the starter gear but the engine still kicks back when starter engages. My question is there any way the ACR's could have been disabled with the TTS,all the other 110's start without any substantial kickback. If so how do I check it?I have tried to reach Steve at TTS but have not been able to reach him.Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any advice.

When you start to download the TTS map to the bike, the 1st screen says enable or not to enable ACR's.  Click the box to enable, then speedo VSS screen comes up, then the download starts of your map.

If you disabled the ACR's then I would guess you would need to complete the download to change any settings. Just a guess, but it seems to make sense since any programming or changes would happen during the download.

I know on the automotive side and this is automotive based we can access the ecm with a scanner or tech one type device and make changes to settings like tire pressure monitors, tire sizes, speedos and other settings without changing the fuel maps.

The ACR'S are enabled on the two 09 SERG that are kicking back when starting , also pulled the plug wires and you can hear the acr's working. We have two other 110's in our group 2010 models with the same setup Mastertune,2'' baffles and either X pipes or the Power Duels and they crank without the loud kickback noise. The 2009 SERG that are making the noise on cranking do it with or without the Mastertunr maps installed.Any help or suggestion.

Check the cranking compression on the problem bikes and report your findings.  Sounds like ACR's may be inop.

Learning what your CCP is would be a good thing it would validate that the compression releases are working you should see the compression drop from 205-220 to 150 - 165 if they are there abouts anyhow.

I also sent you a PM regarding trying a different map.

I'll check the compression on both bikes just for giggles but both are under 5000 miles and like I said they do it even with the oem maps installed and the acr's hiss very loudly while spinning over with the plug wires pulled. This is a starter/compensator kickback while cranking problem.I'm afraid I mislead yall about it being a map problem.Sometimes it cranks sometimes it hits and kicks back. Thanks

A low battery voltage will cause a kick back, a slightly bent jack shaft will also cause kick back, a loose ground wire on the battery will cause the problem and lastly too much timing will cause kick back.

Hey Doc thanks for the input I've read several of your post ,enough to know you know a lot more than me.What gets me is out of four bone stock cvo 110 bikes two 09 and two 2010's all have have the exact same mods TTS,2" baffles open head pipes(X pipe,V&H Pwr Duels)the 2010's never kick back when starting but the 09 SERG'S make a horrible clank most every time.I was told by a HD Tech at our local dealer that the noise is coming from the front compensator sprocket over running the primary when the engine fires and spins faster than the starter is turning the ring gear.Does this sound right and is the compensator sprocket different on a 2009 than a 2010?I really fear another ring gear/clutch basket failure next month on our trip to Sturgis and that could really be a bad deal as far as we have to go and as many times as you have to grit your teeth when you push that little button. The last time it failed the starter completly lock up on the broken ring gear tooth and had to be trailered. Help,Thanks Mike

i had this problem last month,  steve cole told me to go to both spark tables  and  make the first row  at 750 rpm  all zeros from 100 kpa  to 70kpa ,  reduces spark  while cranking,  it works
