Hard Bag Grommets - Need Suggestions
« on: April 14, 2010, 01:32:55 AM »

Ok, I bought a set of hard bags (and a king tour pak) for my '08 SERK and sent them to Gene (Paint by Gene - he rocks by the way  :bananarock:) to have them painted to color match (more on all of this with pics later / in a separate post).  I just got everything back and have spent the larger part of this evening reassembling everything.

However, the one thing I just don't have the energy to tackle at this late hour is trying to install the little rubber grommets into the saddlebags.  You know, the ones that hold the pin that holds the saddlebag in place...

The hole on the bag looks far too small for me to shove that grommet through but looking at the neck of the grommet I'm sure it's the right part.  (Not even sure if they make more than one kind.) :confused5:

Anyway... all of that to ask this... does anybody have any suggestions on how to get that grommet into place on the bags any easier than what it looks like it's going to be?  I thought about soapy water, etc. to make them slick(er) but I'm not even sure that will help.

I'd welcome any help / suggestions you may have.   ;D

Soapy water or silicon spray is a good start. Get the grommet into the hole starting with one side of the circle and fold the leading edge through the hole and work your way around the circle. It takes some time and patience but it does work.

And they need to be room temperature, or warmer.

Ride safely,

Well, I fought the good fight and they're in... :apple:

The ends of my thumbs and first two fingers feel like they've been through a meat grinder but I was able to shove the bowling ball through the water hose...

It occurs to me that without some magical tool to make this a lot easier I'd REALLY hate to be the guy that has that job for a living... :o

It's definitely hard on the fingers!  I did use a small screwdriver, but VERY carefully.  One slip and it's over...

That crossed my mind several times but I just couldn't bring myself to do it...

Yeah, you've either got to be very brave or very dumb, depending on how successful you are!
