oil change with oil cooler
« on: April 18, 2010, 11:49:14 AM »

May be a dumb question but I have never had a oil cooler. Are there any special things to do when changing oil or will the oil drain automatically from the cooler or keep old oil in it. The manual still says 4 qts. Do you have to add extra for cooler? I told you it was a dumb question. :-\

I believe the only way to completely change ALL the oil is with one of these units... :2vrolijk_21:

Don't do anything special.  In the sump, lines and elsewhere there's always a little oil left over.  Sweat it if you must, but it's no big deal.

Also, if you're engine is like most, refilling after an oil change with a full four quarts will be too much.  With a cold engine look for the oil to be about halfway between full and and a quart low on the dipstick.  More than that you'll likely quickly lose some oil out the breather anyway.  Normal volume to refill the engine with after a change is commonly about 3.5 quarts.

probably not a big deal, my concern is I was changing to royal purple and didn't know how much the cooler held. I assume it will mix with the syn 3 with no problem.

The little bit of old oil that remains won't cause a problem when you change brands.  People do this stuff all the time without flushing the entire system, in cars, trucks, motorcycles, lawnmowers, and whatever else you can think of, and it's not a problem.  As previously mentioned, don't just dump in 4 quarts like the book says.  The smart way to do it is to add 3 quarts, run the engine at idle for a minute to fill the filter and cooler, shut it down and check the oil level with the dipstick.  Add oil only until it reads between 1/3 and 1/2 of the way between ADD and FULL.  When you check the oil hot, you don't want it to be more than 2/3 of the way between ADD and FULL.  This is to prevent blowby into the air cleaner.
