Hard starting
« on: April 19, 2010, 10:39:59 PM »

103 in with mid range cams. I'm having problems starting when hot. I'm getting back fires and its kicking the starter out. I already wasted 1 starter. Harley put it on the dyno and says everthing is normal as usual :-X. Any ideas?

You most likely have more than starter problems.  I had the same thing with my 103.  They replaced the compensator as well as the starter.  Glad I have the ESP.  Try bumoping the starter first then hitting it for the actual start.  That seems to have helped mine.

Hi all,

Had the same problem some time ago with my old 1999 road king when I went to 95cu big bore,
it ended up being and incompatability between the harley 1550 forged high comp pistons and
the SE203 cams, had so much cranking compression that when I checked it, the comp was so
high it fired my comp tester out the plug hole like a bullet!

I changed to SE258s and it cured it, cost me one starter and two starter ring gears!

Ride safe.

What cams?
Options: compression releases or less cranking pressure. JMHO

Kerry,

What is the cranking compression cold?  (Be sure to hold the throttle open until the gauge doesnt move any more.)
what is the compression hot as well?

What cam is in the bike
Are you using stock heads?   Stock CVO heads or worked heads ?

Had a similar problem with my 05 SEEG w/ Zippers cams.  Ended up changing the ring gear and starter pinion gear to a Rivera set up.  There is a thread to this under the 04/05 SEEG section.  Also shimmed the pinion gear so it would engage before it started to spin.  No problems since.

You need compression releases....will make starting a breeze...all the 110s have compression releases....I believe the new Limited with 103" has them also.
