Still, the Milwaukee company’s results beat analysts’ forecasts, and investors were cheered by a return to profitability at its financial services unit.

Harley-Davidson reported a profit of $33.3 million (all figures U.S.), or 14 cents per share, in the three months ended March 28. That’s down from $117.3 million, or 50 cents per share, during the same period last year.

I dropped into a HD dealership in Southern Ontario over the weekend, and the dealer told me that we shouldn't be surprised to see several Canadian dealerships shut their doors before the end of the year.

Hey Egultrac, which one of our fine Southern Ontario dealers did you visit?  In the last 2 days I've been in
Barrie H-D, Davies H-D and H-D of Toronto... Could have been there when you were and didn't know it.

MoCo, are you listening?   CHINA...build the dealerships and they will come!  China is the new "America".  Their standard of living is improving exponentially.

India isn't far behind but I'd put my money on China to turn a profit and build a customer base.  They are in their "Baby boom" now...If you win their loyalty, we'll be exporting HDs for generations to come.

Wow, you really made your rounds. I was at HD of Toronto, located at the very north end of Yong Street last Saturday morning. Just driving by, saw the sign, and decide to stop in for a coffee and chat. It was a very friendly dealership.

Did you mean Davies H-D or HD of Toronto?

Davies is on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill (Toronto north) and H-D of Toronto is now in their new store on Lawrence Ave. just east of the Don Valley Parkway in Toronto.  They moved 3 weeks ago closing their Front Street location near the Rogers Centre & CN Tower in downtown Toronto.

You've confused me, which by the way is not hard to do at all!  ::)

Just wondering if I understand you correctly.

You are correct, it was Davies HD on the north end of Yong Ave. Surprisingly it is quite a small dealership when compared to the large dealerships out here in in Western Canada. Although even our dealerships can look small when compared to some of the mega shops in the US.

You are also correct... When Davies moved into that location in 1999 it was one of the biggest, but by today's standards it's now average, although I understand that they are one of the biggest as far as sales goes.

When I visited the new H-D of Toronto store on Lawrence I was informed that it is 60,000 square feet.  I believe that makes it the largest in the country.

Bigger is better. The first dealer I dealt with was HD of Yorkton (Saskatchewan) when they were at their old location. While their new location is still a very small ma & pa shop, their first location was so small that that had work on the bikes in a tiny, smoke filled, unventilated basement. The bikes would be pulled up and down a steep stairway. Maybe the good old days weren't always that that great, but somehow we survived without cellphones, and Blackberrys. And we didn't get lost without Navigation systems either.

Ah yes, those were the good ol' days!  Some of my favourite Harley shops are those little ones out in the countryside off the beaten path.  Unfortunately today they are few and far between.

Kind of like those old country hardware stores with the wooden floors that always seemed to have just what you're looking for, even if they have to take a few minutes searching through boxes and cubbards, dusting them off before handing the product to you.

Today almost all of them have been replaced by the BIG box stores... Bigger is NOT always better IMHO.
