Radio just quits!
« on: April 28, 2010, 02:18:42 PM »

All,

I have the H/K in my 06' CUSE and I have a radio issue.  I ride for about 5 minutes and the radio cuts out no volume.  The radio is still on and the stations/CD track still show but no volume.  I power radio off and back on and it works for another 5 minutes.  I thought it maybe needed a software upgrade which it did but that did not help.  Any ideas or past exsperiences or solutions?  I did a search and not luck.

Thanks!

A new twist.  If I just let the radio play while it sits it seems to work just fine??  WTF?

Broken inner fairing brackets are very common.  When they break, the radio becomes part of the support and the attachment point is the actual heat sink on the outside of the radio.  I believe this can be causing your issue when the bike bounces.

If the bracket isn't broken, I'm afraid you'll probably need the radio to be replaced.  I've had two different ones do it on my '08.  Both were replaced, fortuneately under warrenty.  Try plugging in your headset and switching the dash switch to headset mode (forward) if it plays, switch it back to the normal mode and see if the radio comes back on.

A number of us here have had this problem so it's not isolated to one bike or one year.  You may want to take that fact to the dealer and argue that it's a known problem and see if they'll cut you a break. If not, DO NOT PAY HD FOR A NEW ONE.  You'll just get a reconditioned one anyway.  So pay ironcross or one of the other places that fixes your current radio.  It will be a heck of a lot cheaper and the quality will probably be better.

Good luck.

Ride Safe,

Iron Cross charges $250 for all the repairs and does all the updates to bring it to 2010 levels.   Fast turn around time which is important.

Upon their initial release in 06 the HK radios failed far too commonly.  There seem to have been problem children.  Many are reporting very good and very reasonably priced service from Iron Cross mentioned above.  You'll very likely be yanking the radio and either sending it off to be repaired or replacing it with something else.

You folks are seriously paying attention....

The 06 and 07 fairing brackets, broken or not, are an issue. The defect you describe is definitely vibration damage. This is why it's working while it sits. 08 and later radios had an anti-vibration modification installed, but in our opinion, it did not go far enough. The modification we install goes alot further and is able to hold up to the 06 and 07 brackets.

Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions, and thank you all for the kind words.

All,

I will be sending my radio to iron cross next week for the repair.  I was wondering if anyone had the part number for the replacement mounting brackets that I need to get from the stealer.

Thanks.
