XM Antenna Upgrade.
« on: May 14, 2010, 12:31:05 AM »

I was not happy with the frequent loss of XM signal when using the HK radio, so I decided to try this antenna, the SRMT-45 from SRS. Works great, consistant full signal strength, rarely lose it. I did need to add a SMB to FAKRA patch cable to connect it to the pink FAKRA connector on the back of the HK XM module.

After moving the exist XM antenna outside my fairing and still getting signal loss, I am going to try your antenna suggestion.  Thanks for the pictures & information.

I've used this antenna for about 6 weeks now, lots of miles, and I'm happy to say it work great. You won't be disappointed.

Outstanding... What a difference.  Came in the mail today, so off came the fairing.  Simple install with the adapter and test the XM Radio.  I have three full bars of signal in my garage.  That has never happened.  Stormed here this afternoon or there would have been a road test.  Will do one tomorrow on my favorite tree lined drive and see how much better it is on the road.  Thanks SIX38

I'm going to do this.  For us unenlightened, could you explain what SMB and FAKRA means?  I can do the upgrade without understanding, but would like to know what I did other than "cable and antenna thingy worky more better now". :confused5:

SMB and FAKRA are just the plug type on the radio and antenna.  Since they are different you need the "adapter" to connect the new antenna to your radio.
We have this adapter custom manufactured to be compatible with any SIRIUS or XM tuner that has a standard FAKRA connector. The cable is 6 inches long and works perfectly when you want to connect a standard magnetic antenna, marine antenna, or an extension. Since the connectors are straight, it doesn't matter if the FAKRA connector petrudes out or is recessed into the tuner box. Also converts a FAKRA antenna to a tuner that has a standard SMB (non-FAKRA) connector.

Package Contents:

(1) 6 inch SMB-Jack to SMB-Plug adapter cable

Too funny.  Just got back from my test ride.  Vibrated loose. Loctite being added.  Had to stop and tighten the screw/nut on the base.  Rode down all my tree lined roads and never lost signal.  Dropped to 2 bars sometimes, but did not lose the music.  Good investment.

Will it work inside the fairing?  I really don't want to mount it on the handlebars.  What do you guys recommend? :-\

Robmay, No.  The 665 uses a GXM-40 which has a mini-usb type plug.  This antenna does not receive all the bands that are necessary for the 665.  I don't think they are compatible.

Never tried leaving it inside the fairing.  You could try, but I think it will work better outside and not blocked by the fairing and all the wiring under the fairing.  I have a Zumo 550 on my handlebars, so a small antenna is no big deal to me. :nixweiss:

Thanks Rick. I have mine inside the fairing like the CVO's. Does pretty decent but loses the signal in heavy trees when the SW is blocked. I may just try to find a spot outside the fairing I can place it.
