Fork Spring install on a 2009 SERG
« on: May 16, 2010, 08:32:55 PM »

got my freebie Progressive Suspension front fork springs, and thought it wouldn't be a biggie to install, but the HD dealer says it's like a 5 hr install.

What's involved in this- does the fairing have to come off? I figured you'd just have to remove the gauge pod cover, unscrew the fork caps, and drop the springs in?

I've been quoted 2 1/2 hours from one dealer and 4 hours for the other two that i consulted.  Hadn't heard 5 hours from anyone.

I just did the Ricor valves in my '08 RG, and it is a lot more work than what you assumed.  Front wheel, fender, calipers, gauge pod, ignition switch,  side covers, and forks all have to come out.  The only thing you can change by unscrewing the fork plugs is the fork oil.  The actual fork caps are only accessible when the forks are removed.  It is not difficult, but it requires mechanical ability and knowledge greater that an oil change.  If you are willing, and have the tools and fortitude, get a service manual and have at it.  Took me about 4 hours with the help of a friend that also does all his own work.  Probably longer that it should because this was the first front-end either of us has done.  We then did the Progressive cartridges in his 2004 SEEG, and it was faster (after we got the stuck fork out!)

Good luck

Thanks Bill- wow, can't be easy, can it.

If that's the case, I'm thinking of the Ricor Intimator as well, to go along with the PS springs- since it will be apart, might as well do everything I would possibly want while it's already apart.

Not a DIY for me- I'll find an indy or someone.

We are talking about 2 distinctly different products here - the Progressive springs, and the Ricor Intimitador valves.  Maybe you can use them both, but I can't attest to that.  Either way, the installation process is the same, which is what this thread is about  My thought is to use the Ricors, or the Progressive cartridges. Either of these will give you a big benefit over the stock set-up.  Maybe someone else can add a comment about using both in the same fork assembly.

As I read it, you want to use the Progressive springs with the Intiminators. This should work. But the Monotubes and the intiminators will not work, as they are two separate animals. I have the Ricor Intiminators with stock springs and love them.

Yes, originally I was just planning on installing the PS fork springs (not the monotubes). I got these for free during their promotion, when I bought the 940 rears.

Since I just learned it's a lot of labour to install them, I am now wondering if I should also add the Ricor Intimators....kinda like if the RG fairing has to be cracked open for headlight bulbs, might as well do speakers, etc, since it's open.

Not sure how many have this combo, but it's just what I was thinking. I have to call Ricor back now, and see what their opinion is as well.

Just spoke with Brian at Ricor- he advised sticking with the stock springs, as the 2009-2010 springs are 30% stiffer than the previous bikes, but mainly because the stock springs are what they designed the product to work with.

I'll just order the Ricor's, and sell the PS springs. Thanks all for your help and advice.

If you haven't ordered them yet, I believe there is one set left from the last group buy.
