Interesting Read.

I think all Harley owners are a unique bunch very look after and watch over thier bikes like their Kids (I HOPE). They do not want to see any HARM come to them.

My comment is (not to judge or stomp on anyone) but, I have yet to see a thread on "Tear down to excesive heat and oil temp". I thing Harley engines past and present are tough breeds. They seem to take a lot verying use and still come up SWEET.

So, wheather you watch yer oil temp or run a cooler or change oil often these engines will just keep ticking.

I don't know what I would do if I couldn't tweek or modify my bike. Doing that is just as much FUN as riding.

Again GREAT READ

I have had that happen in the past on different motors. You CAN inflict some damage due to excessive heat, such as spun wrist pin bushings, burnt pistons, etc.
Not so much a fault of the oil, just me hammering the motor beyond the limits.
Oh well, I like to tear them down anyway!

i removed the front fender off my 09 flhx. before the removal on a 90 degree day in georgia I would get oil temps of 300 (screamin' eagle stage I intake, rinehart slip ons and SERT) after removal on a 90 degree day it gets up to around 240, HUGE difference.

Kinda depends on how far the walk is or how heavy is the traffic when she craps out....

Riding in Lower Alabama yesterday on my ( new to me, 2 weeks worth) 02 SERK Stock, other than V & H slip ons, 95* temp,  heat index around 103* 2 up combination town and winding back roads over to MS to feed my catfish addiction, temp gauge showed 258* came home on interstate 80mph still 258* seems to hot for my liking, my 79 shovel with stroker kit stays in the 190-200* no matter how hard I ride it ( Ride it as hard as It will let me) , old Iron head same, both have twin down tube oil coolers,Evo runs about 205 tops on a hot day here, will be looking at a oil cooler for sure. I run synthetic in all 3 holes.
Saw someone post saying all CVO have oil coolers? Where?

The Touring model CVO's with 103's or 110's have an oil cooler mounted in front of the voltage regulator (low mount).  The other CVO's, Dyna or Softail, don't come with coolers as standard equipment.  If you're planning to add one to the SERK, I'd recommend forgetting about the H-D kit and looking at what Jagg has to offer instead.  H-D is too fixated on hiding the cooler (style) instead of actual performance.

Unfortunately, a Twin Cam is never going to run as cool as that Shovel, or even an Evo.  The Twinky has been a hot running engine since it's inception, and in fact the launch of the engine was delayed for a year while H-D tried to solve oil system and high temperature problems with the design.  It's only gotten worse as emission regulations have gotten more strict.

I have a twinkie that's an exception to the rule. Now my 09 103 runs pretty warm; 250ish, but my 2002 95 takes forever to get warm. Even after 35 miles at 75mph on the freeway (outside temps close to 100 degrees), then getting stuck in Sturgis rally traffic (the kind where it takes 30 minutes to go 10 or 12 blocks) that 95 never gets over 205. No one seems to know why my 95 runs so cool. It's been dyno'ed, twin scanned and adjusted with SERT, so I know it's not all tuning (not overly rich). I suspect it has more to do with the headwork, cam profile, and exhaust scavaging, but I'm not an expert.

You may be right on the head arrgt, etc.; but it also may be the gauge is off.  But if the motor stays relatively quiet after 10 blocks in Sturgis at over 90 degrees, don't worry, be happy! :huepfenlol2:

Here's a question Steve may be able to answer, or someone who watches statistics on their bike after changes.  Say you take a stock 110" CVO and have it tuned to run with a little more fuel in the AFR.  Nothing crazy, just counteracting the lean stock AFR and to get it running a little better.  How many degrees cooler will it run under apples to apples conditions?  I'm thinking maybe 2%?

With a factory flash, my 09 was getting up close to 300 degrees, now it runs about 240-250 with a TTS map and tune... That's about 15% cooler.. OH, I did add fulsac muffler cores, so not sure how that affected temps..

In the AZ desert(110+ temps) with a built 117" motor I used to consistently see temps in the 280-300 range using 20W50 mobile 1. I switched to Torco straight 60W and dropped temps by about 20 degrees.

Have no idea what to say on the %, Yesterday is was in mid 90's here and on a 60/65  mile run mine was running 240 deg. that was running 70 to 80 mph, i'm running a Thunder Max w/auto tune that is a little fat (rich) on the AFR and i'm running Redline 20W60 and that was riding 2 up with luggage.
