Has anyone tried to quiet down a D&D fat cat?
« on: May 23, 2010, 11:10:58 PM »

I would like to go to this exhaust for the performance, but I know it is too loud for me.  There are several posts of wrapping fullsac baffles with the ebay baffle wrap.
Just wondering if this is an option for the fat cat and would it kill the performance benefits?

I like the tone of this exhaust, but I am an old fart now and I need to turn down the volume...my ears are already ringing. :huepfenlol2:

Can't speak to wrapping or rewrapping a FatCat's baffles.  Have you listened to all their baffle options though.

There is a real difference between the "quiet baffle" and those louder.  This isn't to say that the quiet baffle still isn't pretty throaty.  It's by no means an especially quiet exhaust.  Just pointing out that they do have options.

(loud, louder and loudest!)

I just installed the D & D Fat Cats with the quiet baffle on my 09 CVO Ultra and am very pleased.  I previously ran VH Monster Ovals which were too quiet for my taste (these are for sale if anyone is interested).  The quiet baffle on the D & D's is definitely louder than the V & H but I still wish they had a little more sound.  I did listen to the D & D performance baffle and that is just way too loud.  You will love the D & D's.  Fit and Finish is first class.  Dr. VTWINN was best Price I could find.

I've got the quiet baffle and it's loud.  Was going to attempt what your talking about but couldnt get the baffle out.  I've learned to really like the sound of my D&D but you definitely need to respect others when you're in town or neighborhood.

I agree. I had the performance baffle and it is REALLY loud. Like anyone within a hundred yards will be startled when you light it up. At first I liked it but after doing a ride of 4-5 hrs, I just simply couldn't take it. I ended up switching over to the wrapped version of the performance baffle. It's essentially the same baffle with wrapping therefore there's no change in performance (dyno confirmed).

The wrapped baffle is suppose to be 15% quieter according to D&D. Seems about right to me. Seems much quieter at idle and just about anything under 3000rpms. Once you open the throttle for harder acceleration, its about the same volume as the unwrapped baffle. The "Quiet" performance baffle is by no means quiet compared to other pipes but it's now exactly what I was looking for on my SE Ultra and reasonable for riding through the neighborhood so long as you stay off the throttle.

Thanks for the quick replies.

If you do get the baffle out and wrapped I would greatly appreciate an update.

Currently running 1.75 Fullsacs and like the fact I can leave my neighborhood any time of day and not pizz everyone off, plus they are great for long days in the saddle.
I like the MO's but would not like anything louder.

I've got the quiet baffle and it's loud.
Based on what I have read this is most peoples opinion so I was hoping it could be wrapped and made "quieter".  Of course if wrapping it would cost performance then it would be all for nothing.
The main reason I was looking at the Fat Cat was I like what I see on the dyno graphs with the 2into1's and I love the sound (not the volume) of the Fat Cat.

Having riden next to  Fat Cat quiet yesterday for six hours and as it turns out a FullSac 2" alos, the D&D is louder but not terribly o.

Much louder when tou get on it and louder as it starts but normal cruise and light accel was little difference.  I was sweeping the bikes.

You can't wrap the Performance baffle since it's a "sealed" baffle. Essentially it's a perforated pipe inside a solid pipe with space between the perforated pipe and the solid one. They're welded together and therefore there's no way to add wrapping unless you're going to use a cutting torch and then re-weld the opening.

The "Quiet" baffle is also already sealed with the wrapping used in the space between the 2 pipes. It's installed at the factory so there's no way to add more wrapping material.

Thanks Heatwave
I guess that sums it up for me.
