As of 4:00AM this morning a total of eighty-six Challengers had crossed the finish line.  My buddy Todd, a Homer resident, finished at 3:06AM.  He was greeted by family and friends, including yours truly.

Hey Don,
Yes, event staff arrived late Wednesday, at least that is the first time I saw them.
We were told an unofficial winner will be announced at the party on July 4.  The official winner will be certified and announced at Sturgis in August.  The winner may elect payment in gold or cash.  (We were told)

No photos posted until I return home.  Gaining access to post this comment is difficult enough, uploading photos?
Forget about it.

Our dealer had a sales gal go down outside of Homer (paper says she may have fallen asleep) she apparently hit to bicyclists and went down -broke a collar bone and some ribs that poked a lung so she'll be okay but those ribs breaks hurt no matter what you do-breath, laugh, move.

When I compare this ride (at least from the stories we're getting) with the military style perfection the IBA organizes their rallys and other events, it seems to be clear that the Hoka Hey people have not considered the value of a life seriously enough in the context of this "adventure". Where the IBA requires you to make hotel/motel stops for sleep, this event apparently urged riders to keep going until they fall off their bikes. Very intelligent.

I wonder where the legion of lawyers is gathering at this time to sue the hell out of the organizers.

I am happy for each and everyone being smart enough to drop out at a time when they were still functioning and for each and everyone for arriving unharmed. May that be 100 or 200 out of 600 or 800 or 1,000.

Ride safely,
Louis

Link above is to a pending lawsuit.

If they had set this up on an IBA standard (man did that piss these folks off on Facebook when the IBA was brought up) or a Tour de France type set up, the accidents could have been minimized.  It was basically a free for all & 1 fellow died as a result in Wyoming.  I blame the organizers for that poor organization & maps & general nonsense - to the riders who competed, with a couple of exceptions, much, much respect.

Yes and it appears some of it will unfold in court.  On Facebook a fellow is offering to refund entry monies (not a prime organizer believe he is a sponsor) & some of the comments made by riders in this event go well beyond troubling as to the intent of the promoter or promises unfulfilled by the organizers.  Others are as happy as clams to be in Homer.

There was another HH death - tragically - in Alaska.  http://www.dps.state.ak.us/PIO/dispatch/Trooper%20Dispatches%20of%2007-05-2010.20100705.txt  Story on accident near bottom of page.

The Finish Party was okay with many of the Challengers, who completed the ride, present.  Jim Durham announced, "The winner will be declared in Sturgis."  Another unkept commitment.  He also declared there would be another Challenge next year via San Diego to Nova Scotia.  He said, all of us with a Challenge coin from 2010 could participate without paying the entry fee.  He also said, there was a major sponsor placing $1M in the purse.  Who knows?  Time will tell.
I confirmed there were less than 540 riders who departed Key West.  And, there were 195 riders who checked-in here in Homer.  I assure you these numbers reflect the facts, irregardless of what others may report.

I sadly read the report last night regarding the gentleman from Ocala, FL.  He was on the Glen Highway here in Alaska.  My condolences to his family.
I was also informed of another unconfirmed death, supposedly in the lower 48.  I was told the family wanted to keep the details private due to life insurance limitations.
I will point out this fact: Both confirmed deaths were riders wearing no helmet.  I know this is a personal choice but, I would say this is an unnecessary risk, in my humble opinion.

I should be home in a few days to sort the photos.

Later,
Charlie
