The Finish Party was okay with many of the Challengers, who completed the ride, present. Jim Durham announced, "The winner will be declared in Sturgis." Another unkept commitment. He also declared there would be another Challenge next year via San Diego to Nova Scotia. He said, all of us with a Challenge coin from 2010 could participate without paying the entry fee. He also said, there was a major sponsor placing $1M in the purse. Who knows? Time will tell.
I confirmed there were less than 540 riders who departed Key West. And, there were 195 riders who checked-in here in Homer. I assure you these numbers reflect the facts, irregardless of what others may report.
I sadly read the report last night regarding the gentleman from Ocala, FL. He was on the Glen Highway here in Alaska. My condolences to his family.
I was also informed of another unconfirmed death, supposedly in the lower 48. I was told the family wanted to keep the details private due to life insurance limitations.
I will point out this fact: Both confirmed deaths were riders wearing no helmet. I know this is a personal choice but, I would say this is an unnecessary risk, in my humble opinion.
I should be home in a few days to sort the photos.
Later,
Charlie
