And yet, after the last 8 or so posts, people still call the a dealership and not a stealership.
Go figure.
All they want is your wallet.

agreed -- found a reputable independent nearby.  When I dropped the bike off, he actually took time to go over the bike with me and discuss what exactly he would do at different intervals.  Then discussed oils and allowed me the option to chose what I wanted.  next we discussed potential mods and he suggested several ideas, each dependent on $ and riding style -- This level of service I never received during the past 15 years from HD!

Getting a bit off topic but i had my dealership dyno tune my v-rod. I went back to straighten out some previous paperwork later in the day and heard them abusing my bike on the dyno. The v-rod has a CFR pipe on it and when the engine slowed down you could hear several (kids) mechanics laughing then rev the crap out of it again. I told them that's enough of that and installed a Thundermax myself and then on all three of my bikes. They will never get that chance again!

Ouch.

I always stay with my bike while it's being dyno'd.

This is the stuff that makes me wish I'd bought a stock version and then added the bits I want through a reputable indie. Mostly, what I'd want to add would allow my warranty to live anyway.
Live and learn. At least it looks purty parked in my garage.

When I picked up my Softail Convertible, the dealer said I had to have the first 1000 mile service done by them. After that they said I could do it myself. The sales guy said Harley would not honor the warranty if I did the 1000 mile service myself. Is that true or not? I'm real close to needing this service and I'd much rather do it myself.

You were either intentionally lied to or misinformed by someone whose responsibility it is to know  better.  Your vehicle warranty is not predicated upon the manufacturer's licensed dealership doing any of the prescribed maintenance.  They can't extort service out of you by threatening to void the warranty.  You can do it yourself or have any other shop of your choice do it.  To be extra safe keep the receipts for the materials to show you did it.

As noted already, you were lied to by someone who should definitely know better.  Harley dealerships have been pulling this kind of crap for decades, but I thought it had been getting better lately due to more people becoming aware of their rights under the law.  I guess there will always be those who will try to BS the customer, however.

While we're on the subject, if this same dealership tries to tell you that you have to use Harley parts and fluids to maintain your warranty, I would suggest you find another place to do business and then advise the owner that you won't be doing business with him in the future because his employee's are a bunch of lying azzholes (or something a little less inflamatory if you prefer).  I've been in some places where it's just one or two jerks doing the lying, and I've also been in a couple places where the BS started with the owner and flowed downhill.  I wouldn't buy a spark plug from one of those places, much less anything else.

I've had warranty work done by my dealership and no one has ever, not once, asked for quantification of routine maintenance (and I do ALL the preventive maintenance myself, including tire changes).

Got a good dealer, Smokey Mtn HD in Maryville, TN.  I'll be going back when I trade for my next HD.  They're first class in my book.

I just took in my FLHTCUSE5 to the stealer for the 1000 mile service and requested redline products. I was told it might void the warranty because it was not an "approved" oil. I went off on a little rant about Hugo Chavez and his communist oil that Harley buys and that I wont buy it. Then he asked if I still want the redline oil?

i guess i must be lucky with my dealer , and i didnt buy my first harley from him, but last week i went in and ordered my 2011 cvo softail convertible from him,
harley city in brunswick  australia ,( a suburb of melbourne) is the only place i would trust my ride to, when my bike needs servicing, either the owner of the dealership picks or the service manager picks my bike up and leaves me a loaner or picks it up in a ute, and delivers it back a day or two later, he has carte blanche to do whatever is needed, but always calls to let me know.
guess we are lucky down under

We have some good ones in the states as well.  My dealer was awarded by HD as having the highest customer satisfaction east of the Mississippi (1/2 the size of the U.S.)...they are good.

Getting back to the oil i concur on the extra primary noise when running redline primary fluid. It"s thin like ATF only synthetic. I'm running 20-50 Amsoil in the primary now and it's much quieter. I do run the redline in the engine and transmission with good results.

I just did the 1000 mile service on my RUSE this afternoon and put Redline in the tranny & primary (I use Mobil 1V-Twin in the motor).  Used the Redline in my '07 with good results.  Guess we'll see on the '11.
