Same issue with my SER4, Zippers MaxFlow center section fractured where the nut is fixed.  Just got the Arlen Ness Scalloped round cover that fits the end of the filter. This thread has hit on all of the causes and the resolves.  What I don't understand is why the manufacturers are not picking up on this and fabricating a mounting plate for the cover that attaches to the three mounting bolts that hold the filter on and providing a broader base for the AC cover.

I hate to beat this subject to death....but.............. ;)

I removed the stock cover from my Arlen Ness Big Sucker and installed the one from my old '08 FLHTC. Jerry (grc) was right...you can see a big difference.

I must retract something I said in an earlier post. I thought the round rubber gasket on the K&N made contact on four spots with the stock cover. I don't think so. Although I didn't remove the filter and test fit, it looks like the entire weight of the cover is supported by the center screw. Now I understand why it breaks. I suspect the metal in the filter wasn't designed to support that much weight with vibration to boot. I don't mind H-D saying some part combinations won't work...but being an engineer, I like to know WHY.

 :soapbox: :soapbox:

Just my left my dealership and they have had numerous failures of this kind.  On all sorts of bikes.

I changed mine out and now ordered (on backorder) the chrome mounting brackets.  Since the old Oval cover hid the monuting brackets, I didn't order the chrome version.

More money.

The Oval would need to be modified to have at least one if not more than one additional mounting point.  From the factory the plastic molded part keeps the Oval from placing all the vibration on the single bolt.

Anyway the new part looks great.

$145.00 later.

Have to admit, looks better on the bike than the Oval.

OK...back to the the subject.  ;)

Is your dealer seeing failures with the old style football shaped cover too? I like the one you picked...but skulls ain't for me.

 :( :( :(

Yes.  They have seen the failures back to 06 styles.

Any single bolt atrtachment Oval can fatigue the metal on the filter.  The issue normally occurs with the high mileage filters such as the K&N which can stay on the bike for 50,000 miles and more.  The HD paper filters are normally replaced often enough they don't fail (not on the bike long enough).

Food for thought.

That makes sense. In this case, longevity is a problem.

Thanks for the feedback.

There are also some filter/cover combinations that don't allow the two to make contact.  So the bolt is pulling the center of the filter and the cover toward each other.  That stress point is a killer for the filter housings.

Mine is an 08 SEUC with what I would call the football style cover.  Mine broke out also around the center bolt hole.  I posted on this back when happened last year.  My fix was to use the 1 inch foam door/window insulation that has one sided tape on it.  I placed it around the air filter in four equally spaced places and it has fixed the problem.

Had this happen on my '06 CUSE. Installed Mo Co's air filter service gasket P/N 29591-99 and that was the fix, been running now for 2yrs with no issues.  :2vrolijk_21:
