$10,000 hmmmmmmmmm I'd add an H-D 6-speed gear set. Reduces your RPMs significantly at highway speed which reduces vibration which reduces fatigue. Buy the H-D with the bike and it will be covered under your 6 year extended service plan (ESP)which I hope you plan on buying. I would also advise a Reinhart exhaust system and a Screamin Eagle Stage 1 breather and Race Tuner (SERT). H-D makes a nylon luggage rack bag that velcros to your tour-pak luggage rack that adds storage space ( a must with two people aboard) and is totally waterproof. Tour-pak and saddlebag felt liners (not the removable bags, your bike comes with them I believe) reduce the vibration of items stowed and are great for when you just run to the store and toss something in them. Tour-pak and Saddlebag Lid organizers are worth their weight in gold. Highway pegs for yourself and footboards for the passenger. You might also look at Kuryakyns adjustable passenger pegs which work with the footboards. They give your passenger a variety of foot positions. The pouches that snap to the rear saddlebag guards are handy and you can get one side with a rechargeable flashlight. I'm sure you'll get a few more suggestions, but that would do it for me.

have a great ride

Do you ride now ?  If so what tendancies do you have.

Where do you plan on doing most of your riding?

Safety
1.  Rain Gear
2.  Good Helmets
3.  Good Glasses / goggles     for sun consider glasses you would wear on the water for glare.
4.  Side Lighting on your bags for cars to see you
5.  Good boots with ankle support
6.  Pipes that can be heard by cars so you dont get run off the road .....
7.  Navigation unit  Garmin, Harley or other

Performance / Riding

Will delay comment until you tell us where most of your riding is done / how you like to ride / 1 up or 2 up most of the time etc.   Building a motor without your style in mind is never going to make you happy.
High Flow Air Cleaner   Harley, Ness, Zippers, K&N
Screaming Eagle Race Tuner

Handling

1  Ride Str8 or True Track
2  6 speed Transmission
3. Progressive 440's
4. Change the fork oil to the SE fork oil
5.  4 / 37 primary setup use with 6 speed   give better off line go and 6 gear to cruise with on highways

Looks

Quality Pipes
Chrome Oil Line
Highway mounts and Foot Pegs
Chrome Inner Primary
Tour pak organizers for both main tourpak and also for saddle bags
Hand air pump for your shocks if you stay stock
Harley tread / air pressure checker for tires
Flash Light to go on the bike
Bungy Cords incase you want to carry something on the rack on your tourpak
2nd headset for your passenger bike generally comes with 1 and had to purchase my 2nd on on my ultra the SEUC maybe different
Matching Saddlebag lights
Kuryiakin (sp)  Panecia lights for your bike / turn signals
Spare bulbs for your running lights and turn signals

Let me know bout the riding habits / terrain and I will be happy to make some motor suggestions to you.

Hi sanjoseduke,
Since safety is your first priority I would agree with everybody here sofar in increasing your lighting especially if you ride in low light conditions. In addition to what has been said already you may want to check out the must have changes thread for the FLHTCUSE. For lighting you may want to get the Harley color matched saddlebag LED spoilers to increase rear lighting as well as the side saddlebag LED hinge lights.
Anothere item I would list as a safety and comfort change would be a taller windshield such as the Clearview shield.Unless you are very short the stock shorty shield will funnel the wind into your face and beat you around alot. You should take a ride though for yourself to see if it should be replaced. Clearview can custom make the shield to your height.
Another item that will make it easier for you to throw a leg over the bike and give your passenger more room to move is a tourpack relocation bracket that moves the pack back 2.5".  It is talked about on the must have changes thread as well. It runs about $85 and is better than the Kuryakyn version for your bike since it will have an under tourpack amp and the Kuryakyn one cant be used on the FLHTCUSE.

Your first upgrade should be PM brakes front and rear.

A run, turn, brake controller by H.D. or Kuryakyn.  Allows your rear turn signals to act as brake lights and turn signals.  Much more noticable brake lights so you don't get rear ended!

....If you're planning on Internal Engine Mods, you would be ahead waiting 'till you return from your trip, for time purposes and to find out if you are satisfied with the way it performs.....

I would agree with what Hubbard has said... I wouldn't get carried away with doing anything internally to the motor, especially aftermarket stuff before returning from trip. I would wait on exhaust especially if you going aftermarket. Reason for this is if something were to happen to this modification (exhaust) while you were on your trip it may be hard to have a dealer other then the installing dealer to fix it for free. If it were determined that the install was improperly done then another dealer will not probably fix it for free where as the dealer that did the install probably would. If you want to add any Harley-Davidson part (example H-D Six Speed Tranny) I think you would be covered at another dealer.

I was in a similar situation when I got my bike in 2004. Picked up first of July and headed out to Sturgis first of August. Barely had enough time to get the 1k break-in miles done, and it serviced before trip. Only thing I added before trip was H-D King Tour Pak (had that installed at time of purchase), full size windshield, and Kurykan Highway pegs (the latter two I installed myself). I think you are better off not getting major modifications before a big trip. JMHO.

It never ceases to amaze me how well we, (the members on this site{THE COLLECTIVE MIND} are at spending other peoples money!!!)  SPIDERMAN is the worst culprit (No offense Bro!!!!, still love ya like a brother.....oh wait, you are my brother), anyway,  my pics would be (on a $10K budget,  wow, is that ALL you can spend.........sheeeeeeeiiiiit!!!!!!).

First,  you got a bagger......it's a bagger.......it's always gonna be a bagger.......if you want a Hot Rod......You would have bought a Destroyer.......That said.  Here are the things that I'd like to have on mine.....(sounds like your gonna ride 2 up and take some trips)........

Do the pipes and breather (pipes are made for everyones taste{I have Hooker True Duals on mine and like the adjustability,  but they doo make some noise}....BTW, if you go with Hookers,  make sure you buy the ones made for the 103" motors....they have 3 differen't models depending on engine size and intended use,  the difference is in the head pipes and baffles and can be adjusted VERY easily for as much torque as possible....Heavy bike,  two up,,,bags packed....you want torque baby...) As far as the breather goes,  DOHERTY POWER PACC IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO.  everyone on this site knows my preference to Tim Doherty's breather kit....  but do some homework,  talk to people who have them and they will All tell you .There is no competition here....
If you want reasonably quiet pipes,  the Rhineharts are a good choice (sound good,  look good, perform OK).

BUY A GOOD SEAT....NO DISCUSSION.  If your gonna do 6K miles with the navaguesser on the back,  you want something comfortable (A good seat with backrest can run up to $1K,  and the best money you can spend for long trips, don't cheap out here).  There are a lot of good choices,  can't comment on any,  have a stock seat and a HD plastic balloon(one of their cheap seats {$200 and it aint worth much more.....but better than stock} .  (boy I wish I had your budget) but the word from the "collective mind" as I call it here on this site is that Corbins,  Mustangs, and AllDay......like pipes.....pick what you like.  BTW,   Had a Brother with one of those hard as a rock Corbin"s that felt like sh$t when you first got on,  but do 600-700 a day for a couple of days,  and they feel pretty good.

Do the 6 speed tranny.  I don't have the kind of money to have one,  however Spiderman has let me ride his bike on several occasions and it's worth every penny if you plan on long rides.

You gotta do a a EFI mod,  I prefer the DYNOJET kit because of desgn (cost is a factor here too.). The DYNOJET Kit , can way out perform the race tuner at half the price {not to mention the Xtra $$$$ to have them DYNO TUNE your bike....(By some 20 year old sh$t STAIN that can't even install spark plugs properly......oh sh$t look closer,  if the HD race tuner chit's the bed....your stuck in the middlle of nowhere,  last time an Ignition pooped on "US" So.Cal we were 120 miles outside of Vegas and needed a part from Vegas......Guess who did the Xtra 240 miles to get the freakin part (by the way,  if your handy with computers,  the maps are available on line and you don't have to pay some 20 year old wrench at the local stealer {Just got out of HARLEY COLLEGE......yeah...RIGHT. what a joke}) to screw up your bike, and then put his hand out for money....kinda like going to Starbucks for a $5.00 cup of coffee and they have the nerve to put a tip jar out......

You sound like your gonna be riding right out of the block with the time frame you mentioned.......break it in....change the oils put AMSOIL in the big bastard ( after 1K miles) and roll for a while.  You'll figure out how to spend the rest as you go...

As they used to say.......Good Trip Babe....(we'll at least they did where I came from....different day!!!!)
Just the basics.........

Enjoy the ride.......

Make the bike fit you.  Make it a little different so you can pick it out of a crowd in a parking lot full of 'em.  Free up the breathing (intake and exhaust) so it will be more efficient for better performance and gas mileage.  And replace every fastener on it that you can with a polished SS one so that you'll want to look at the bike closely at ea. gas/rest stop (that way you'll hopefully pick up on problems before they develop to the bad stage)  Har!  spyder

Wow thanks for all the replies. I knew I could count on you all to over-run my $10k budget by 50% or more. You folks are the greatest. Any ideas where I can get the best price for the HD & aftermarket parts? My dealer offered 20% discount on HD parts when I purchase the scoot.

In answer to a couple questions, I have been riding for 40 years, and currently have an 03 Heritage softail classic that I intend to keep for around town 1 up riding. I have never ridden a bike as heavy as the 06 SEEG. I will use this SEEG primarily for 2 up riding primarily long trips with full gear. I use freeways as little as possible, however I do live in California and unfortunately you have to go very long distances on the freeway to get out of town.

sanjose, if your selling dealer offered 20% off, take it. That's just about the best deal you will get, plus there's no chance of having to return mail order mistakes.
As for mods, I have to sing the praise of the 3.37 gearing and a 6 speed tranny. These bikes are heavy, plus loaded up for touring it's even heavier. The lower gearing really gets the bike moving, then your have the 6 speed for highways. Just checked mine yesterday, and at 70mph in 6th, I'm turning 2600rpms.  Just my opinion, but my feelings are that now I have a bike w/9 to 1 compression, doesn't ping, runs on any gas if necessary, starts easily w/o comp releases, and gets decent fuel mileage. A great combo for long distance touring.   Something my previous over 10 comp bike wouldn't do. Guess I'm just getting old. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
