Aircraft carrier cable snapback
« on: July 08, 2010, 10:42:41 PM »

For those who served on board an aircraft carrier, you know the dangers when aircraft are trapping, (landing). This video show how it sometimes goes wrong and if your not paying attention the deck will jump up and bite you. It looks like we might have a new Olympic high jumper. Andy.

Wasn't until the 2nd pass of the video from that slightly different angle that I noticed the aircraft went down and the pilot ejected.

Sometimes it happens during flight ops.  I feel sorry for the pilot though.  Not only did he have to eject out of an F-18 and lose his plane, but he'll have to give a bottle of the Air Boss' choice in alcohol for hitting the number 4 wire.  Pilots are trained to hit the number two or three wire because if you hit the number 1 wire (furthest aft), that means you came it too low and could have "bought the farm" and if you hit #4 wire, (last of the arresting wires) means you came in too high and barely missed being a "bolter" or missing the cable entirely.  In the eight years I was aboard the Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) we never had an arresting wire snap like that.  They're rare, but they do happen.
