Engine Fried .....
« on: July 13, 2010, 08:14:47 PM »

Got some bad news today.

MY 2009 SE Ultra Classic (20,000 miles) will be down 2-3 weeks as the engine values were fried from the heat. The told me (and showed me) that the Cat blocked up which increased the heat on the rear cylinder and then the front. The header pipe was dark green and black from the heat.

The big time heat also toasted the brake wire next to the pipe and fried the brake fluid which lead to the loss of the rear brake (only 20 minutes) on our Smoky Mountain trip last week.  YIKES.....

The MOCO has already approved the repairs.................

So.................... I cancelled a Michigan UP / Milwaukee / Around Lake Michigan trip today that was planned for next week.  DARN............

Hopefully, the next few weeks goes by fast and the repairs are successful.

UNFORTUNATELY.......... doubt will now be in my mind as I ride.....  (no warranty past the 2 year standard)

I've often heard of CC melting and restricting flow in some vehicles.

So sorry to hear of this. Lose the cat after the replacement and get a good tune. There's plenty of non-CVO headers around.

Just for your information, you can buy the extended warranty any time during the 2 years the bike is under the factory warranty. After the 2 year expires you cannot buy an extended warranty.

That sucks.  :( Just another reason to ditch 'the cat'.

Good luck on getting your bike repaired and returning to the open road.

Cats do get plugged up.  I remember this with cars back in the days following the introduction of cats.  That and a lot of grass fires.

I once had a brand new firebird leave me on the side of the road. Opened the hood to look and it was glowing RED. Plugged cats.

Might consider calling Jenny at TRI County and purchasing the Extended if you plan on keeping the bike.  20% off

Update:

MOCO has approved new front and rear cylinders - full replacement of top half of engine. Plus new header pipe, etc. - under warranty!

Time frame - should have the bike bake later this week or early next week.

The doubt will pass after a few hundred miles. I'll bet someone (A dealership) would remove the CC and still keep you warranteed. Worth looking into. When I worked for HD, we did all sorts of mods and stood behind them using HD Warranty. Service manager has a lot of discretion here. I too like the extended warranty idea.
