Starter Problems
« on: July 17, 2010, 02:56:10 PM »

Was having problems with my starter not engaging properly, at first I thought it might be the acr. I had it looked at by my dealer back in March of 09. They replaced a part and said it was fixed. The problem continued. I thought, well I have the extended warranty so why worry. Then a friend of mine is telling me he is having the same problem on his 08 SEUC and takes it to the same dealer. Dealer tells him it's out of warranty and MOCO will most likely not cover it. I called another dealer a few miles down the road and advised them I was having starter problems or acr, I also told them I has it worked on under warranty a year ago and it's still doing the same thing. They advised me to bring in a copy of the repair order and they would look at it. I was at the new dealer for about an hour and they called me to the service desk and advised me not too worry about it, that the MOCO advised them not too repair the starter but to replace it with a new one. Go figure, one won't look at it and the other fixes it with a new part and was happy to do so. Guess where I'm going from now on along with my friend.

Sounds like you have the extended warranty and your friend doesn't. What did the first dealer do wrong then?
Why didn't you take your bike back to the dealer that did the inital repair?
I'm under the impression that the MOCO would have told either dealer to replace the starter.

If your friend was out of warranty it's not the dealer's fault.

Question, my 2009 SERG is starting to have problems starting. It sounds like the starter in not engaging and the sound it makes is like the internal engine is falling apart. This happens once or twice and then it finally starts normally. Is there a problem out there with the starters on the SERG's?

The problem is with the 110 engines.  They eat starters and I think your's needs to be replaced.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear, my friend took his to the same local dealer they advised him that MOCO would not cover it. It had a repair before the warranty expired. I had the same problem, they repaired it back in March of 09. Still doing the same thing. Talked to another dealer a few miles down the road. They advised me after looking at it that the MOCO has acknowledged the problems with the starters and instead of repairing them like they do most warranty items they advised this dealer by letter to replace the whole starter, not to repair it like it was done in the past. Like GRC has stated several times in his posts, the dealer has the option to repair or not. If you don't like the answer you received then go to another dealer. This is what I did. If you are having starter problems I would ask about a letter that was sent out to the service Dept's in regards to replacing a starter.

Is there any way to rebuild these starters? I know in the old days, you could take them up to the local starter/alternator shop and they'd fix them up for a few bucks.

I have the 1.4K and in the middle of a start, it frequently will hiccup, so I'm guessing I'll be dealing with this sooner or later.

It's most often the starter clutch assembly.  I've had two replaced and at another time replacement of the pinion and ring gear. You generally won't get a starter replacement for a bad starter clutch ass., but if you do, pay the extra $$ and get a chrome starter. The Dog

Does anyone have a copy of the letter or service bulletin issued by Harley that I can use when I go to the dealer?
