Chirping noise
« on: July 28, 2010, 05:35:45 PM »

I have it..... Not an exhaust hanger. Has nothing to do with brakes. Chirps whether sitting still or moving. Scoot is pretty freshly out of the shop. just had a 50k service and new throttle body installed. This bike is squeaking/chirping like hell. Only ridden 500 miles since she came out of 50 k service. Was not making this noise before she went to the shop. The noise seems to disappear above 2 grand rpm. Just in time for Sturgis- I put her back in the shop yesterday. I'm a bit discouraged to say the least.

It is a squeaky rubbery noise. The boys at Deluxe Harley here in Gillette seem to think it is a bearing. I'm not convinced of that. it doesn't sound or feel like a bearing to me- but , what the hell do i know??

Mine (08 SEUC ) was chirping. Was rubber mounted ball joint on the engine stabilizer arm , from top of engine to frame. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Funny you say that. I suspected that. I sure hope that is the culprit. Sounds just like something rubber. Thanks for the input.

I guess the obvious question that I always have to ask is, if it didn't do this prior to the dealer working on the bike, and it became evident immediately after they worked on the bike, then what did they do to create this problem?  I would question the person who worked on the bike and find out exactly what parts were removed, replaced, adjusted, tightened, etc.  You mentioned changing the throttle body, for instance.  I think it would be a good idea to go back over everything related to the throttle body change to make sure everything is aligned and tightened properly.  The same would apply to anything else they actually touched during this 50k service.

Lifter went bad..... Took out the S&S gear drive cams too..... Extended Service plan will replace it/them with Screaming eagle chain drive cams. On the lift now.  Keeping my fingers crossed for Sturgis!

The old Tech who worked on the bike is pretty salty. it didn't happen immediately after- was about 400 miles deep. like you, i question everything though. I've mechanic-ed most of my life, both professionally and as a hobby. I really wish i had the facilities to do all my own work, cause' i'd do just that.

Hey Gillette, you are scarrin' me , why remove the gear drive cams for chain drive? Just that I thought that I prevented potential problems myself by going to gear drive, thanks and I hope you are back on the road soon.

don't forget to have Torrington bearings used instead of INAs and Jims chain instead of OEM when going back to chaindrive.

Because when a lifter goes, cam lobes wear off. Gear drive cams are a great idea. They also prevent grenading at high RPM which is part of the original revolution motor complaint- Not solid at High RPM because of the Chain/shoe cam setup.  My bike doesn't even have a rev limit as near as I can tell. I'm not that excited about going back with a screaming eagle cam setup. My local HD shop says they will do it using Extended Service plan, and they do not install gear drive cams at all.
Sturgis is Here, Time is an issue and I only own one bike these days. It is what it is. I like to ride fast, but more importantly- I like to ride. Up and running is better than telling everybody what a great bike I have- in pieces, in the shop, in Gillette Wyoming.

check all the screws on the fairing, especially the ones underneath on the forks. Also move the windshield and see if it is loose, even if the screws are tight it may still have some play in it. Same issue happened to buddy of mine on his '04 B/B and he ended up using double tape on the windshield and the outer fairing. That fixed his chirp and now when he takes the outer fairing off the windshield stays attached to it as the tape prevents him from lifting out the windshield once he removes screws. Just a thought....

I have a squeek, chirp,, anything you want to call it and today I finally found it... It's the front fender that needs to be snugged down.. It has just enough play in there, and I guess its kinda dry, that it would squeek when i was moving slowly..  Not sure if I will wait till i have to pull the wheel. or try to bend back the lock tabs and tighten it up. The way I found it was by washing it earlier today and I just happened to lean on it a little... :) :)
