Having another Radio issue with my 2008 Ultra
« on: July 29, 2010, 05:28:55 PM »

I am looking for a simple fix, but my radio just stopped playing through all speakers.

It appears to work, and it is working if you put a headset on.

No sound at all through speakers.

Am I missing something? toggled speaker switch - no go,

My first thinking would be amplifier died or has no power.

any hail mary passes out there?

leaving on a trip in 2 weeks and dealer cannot see it before Aug 7th (4 days before the trip)

if it is the radio head (which I do not believe) it was just replaced 6 weeks ago.

I have been to busy to look at manuals, so what do you think?

Jeff,
My radio started doing the same thing recently.  Everything works... display changes to different station or mode... just no sound.  Doesn't matter which mode - no sound... not even via my GPS.

I left Ft. Smith last Sunday afternoon - radio working when I left the motel, but quit about the time I hit the interstate.  Rode all the way home (160 miles) with no tunes.

After I had been home for an hour or two, I turned the switch to accessory and turned the radio on and it was as if there never had been a problem.  I suspect there is something (transistor, diode, or ...) breaking down.

I'm not too worried... surely this is covered by the warranty?  I am sure the dealer would have to have the bike for a few days and we are heading back out soon, so I will take it in when we get back.

The radios are on a 8 week backorder from harley.

and I have ESP

so I do not want to spend the money twice.

Radio works just fine through the headset.

Same thing happened to me--radio worked for a little while then stopped. If I left it off for a while it would work again then quit after a few min. Then eventually--no sound at all. Vibration damage to the audio circuit. Iron Cross fixed it and re-inforced the fragile parts. Here's the thread...

I could be wrong here, but this did not fail the same way. no popping

it was irratic originaly and the headset would not work.

Somehow I do not believe it is the radio head.

(but I have been wrong before)

There was no popping...just working one min and no sound the next.

jeff your fairing-radio bracket may be broke-cracked also. this causes the damage to the radio described in the earlier threads.

Always check the easy stuff first, rather than jump straight to the most involved possibilities.  The radio was replaced by the dealer 6 weeks ago.  While it's not beyond the realm of reason that the refurbed unit they installed wasn't fixed correctly before it found it's way to your bike, it's just as likely that a poorly made connection came loose.  Remove the outer fairing and check all the connections.  If I remember right, which I probably don't, there is a separate harness and connector for the outboard amp.  If that wasn't connected properly, I could see not having speakers but the headset output working.

I'm definitely no expert on these radio's, but with all that I've been reading about the HK's I don't think they or H-D are either.  It appears to me that they took something that might be OK sitting in an entertainment center and tried to convert it to a motorcycle radio.  Last time I checked my entertainment center didn't vibrate enough to shake the fillings in my teeth, unlike what happens in that fairing on a Harley.  The fact that these problems have continued for several years now tells me that once again H-D isn't planning to fix anything right, they'll just keep replacing them with refurbs until the warranty is gone and then you're on your own.  They really don't care about the ESP expense, that's a different company's headache.  My point is, just like all the other stuff that we wind up fixing on our own, it sounds like a permanent fix for the HK crap will require money from our pockets.  I have no idea what Iron Cross charges for their upgrade, but if you compare it to paying $50 every time the dealer takes out one POS and replaces it with another POS under the ESP, I imagine the cost becomes more reasonable and justifiable.  As much as I hate letting the MoCo off the hook and paying to fix their crap, there comes a time when it just makes sense to cut your losses.

I agree with GRC...I'm on my second warranty refirb radio. Factory warranty is now out, I do have ESP but if it goes out again I'm sending to Iron Cross for the correct fix.  Seems everyone that has used them have been pleased.  Hopefully the current one I have will last until winter...
