Does the group feel these extended warranties are needed? I have a 2009 SERG and the 2yr warranty runs out next year, do you all feel its worth spending this money for these warranties?

Its a feel good thing I suppose, if the extended Insurance Policy was the slightest bit in favor of the Buyer do you think they would push them so fiercely? They are a real cash cow for the MoCo.

It's pretty much like any other type of "insurance", with shared risks and a system that benefits some and just costs others.  Kind of like playing the lottery.  And there are big profits to the MoCo for endorsing the plan, the dealers for selling the plan, and of course the company who actually owns and administers the plan.  Even though we hear about a lot of failures around here, when you consider the entire population of bikes that are "insured" under the ESP, and the fact that most of them have few electrical accessories and get ridden very few miles, the majority of the participants will not receive benefits equal to their investment in the plan.  Face it, that's the only way the system can work and still have all those profits.

I NEVER buy extended warranties....until I bought a SE Harley.  Two months before my original warranty was to expire, my Ultra SE starter was grinding and kicking back....under warranty, $1200 of parts were installed.  I immediately bought 3 years of extended warranty.  This was the 3rd failure on this bike since new and at a little over 30K miles, so I don't trust it.  Now we'll see what happens.

i just picked up my 2011 SESG CVO last Saturday from Kutter.  they had the 7 year with the wheel and tire in the upper $1900's.  he also explained that it's NOT a 3rd party policy but a TRUE FACTORY 5 year extension of the 2 year warranty.

either way, i wasn't going to get it until the wife started talking about the new 6 speaker stereo system, ipod and interface, $1500 worth of wheels, ABS, etc................so i began bargaining.

maybe i could've done better, but i got the full 7 year with the wheels and tires for $1600.  our 07' had a "ghost" in the electrical system - the ignition switch wouldn't work once in awhile and sometimes the radio just repowered itself........lol.   i took it in when it was still under warranty, but they didn't find anything.

i look at it this way:  i just spent $34k on a new SESG2.........is $1600 more gonna break me? i'm covered 100% including towing/car rentals plus hotels for 7 years now?

the way my luck runs, i'll never use it now........but if i didn't get the warranty, i'd be sorry! :P

I'm not trashing HD (how could I?  I invested $40k in my CUSE3) but I owned two Kawasaki Vulcans (still own one) and put on 100,000 miles without extended warranty and never needed it (one cost me $56 for a clutch spring and a gasket; the other $26 for a clutch cable).
On the other hand, I really like the old HD Evo (sound especially at idle) so I'm on the prowl for one.  Hope I don't get bit in the ass.

LOL, we all did the day we ponied up the big bucks for our CVOs.  But that is the price of admission.  Hope you never need your ESP but it sure helped me on my '99 several times.  So far on my '07 everything was fixed (hopefully) under the H-D factory warranty before it ran out.  All I've had to use my ESP for is a new starter last year.  But I've got four more years on it and I'm pretty sure I'll have to use it for something.

Believe him if you must, but if that's exactly what he told you then he lied through his teeth.  It is a service contract, not an extension of the factory warranty.  If you don't want to believe me, then call H-D direct and ask them.  The name of the product is the Extended Service Plan (ESP), and if you look it up on the Harley web site you will see it listed as such.

Did you receive the two part contract that you are supposed to receive when you buy the ESP?  If you did, you really should read it.  If you didn't, you need to have a little chat with your dealership.

Amazing ain't it what peddlers will peddle.  I firmly believe in the value of the ESP for Harley but an extension of the factory warranty it is not.  And when push comes to shove it is not the moco who determines what is and is not covered.  IT is the contract administrator and their field service inspectors.  With that being said I've not had any problem with them whatsoever.  But just know what you are buying.  Caveat emptor.

In my situation the ESP was well worth the money!
8,000 miles- Factory Warranty Program Enhancement done along with valve guide seals.
16,000 miles-ESP valve guide seals $50 deductible because warranty ran out 1 month prior (Got a $250 certificate from Customer Service)
20,000 miles-Using quart of oil every 650 miles, did factory protocol for checking consumption
24,000 miles-New heads
26,000 miles-New lower rocker boxes (pre-clearanced)
29,000 miles-NEW MOTOR
Out of pocket expense (other than time and aggravation) $0
The only reason I'm not riding right now is because I'm waiting for Lakeland H-D to call me to come pick it up!
By the way it's an '08 CVO Springer.
