« on: August 09, 2010, 09:46:55 AM »

Has anyone ever had a moco oil filter fail (that is leak around the gasket) removed it and found the gasket had separated or had a bump...  installed a new filter no leak distinctly remember wiping checking for dirt on the housing mating surface so.... yep bad filter sure of it.

Some more marginal products may get rebid often but from the times I've checked over the years larger volume products have been relatively stable in whom their suppliers are.  Whether they are rebid but done so on longer contracts or just have stable relationships that are maintained I don't know.  But they've not seem to change much.

This is a list I was given a few years ago.  It hasn't changed much in that time.

Don't get hung up on the "how small is the micron filter" BS.  If the 5 mic or less claims that many offer were practically applied some of the good bits in the oil's additive packages would be stripped away and the filters' bypass valves would be kicking in because they'd so quickly plug up.

The HD filters work fine.  Don't be scared off by one bad product either.  One isn't a trend.  It's a mistake or an error.  But it isn't a trend.

You might also look at the K&N filters sometime.  They're good filters too.  But they're more convenient to remove than the HD branded filters.  They've got a big nut on the end so you can grab them with a socket and completely avoid the crank position sensor.
