Engine Cleaning
« on: August 09, 2010, 05:04:19 PM »

What are you guys using to clean the silver engine?  My 06 is starting to show a little age with some stains and such...

water, just plain water.

After thoroughly watering the bike, I use harley-sunwash.

And then lots of water again.

Then I polish with a fiber-cloth and apply harlex-gloss.

I have used nothing but Simple Green on every Harley Engine for the last 20 yrs or so, never had a peeling engine, it works great 50/50 solution in a spray bottle.

After you get it really clean spray it with Pig Spit, makes it much easier to clean next time and for those with black cases it restors the black. Can be sprayed on chrome or paint, no wiping off unless you spray to much. I love this stuff!

I've been using SIMPLE GREEN, but it just doesn't seem to do the trick anymore.

The one thing that really sucks about these motors is, if you ever have a gasket leak and you run any time with oil on the jugs you get a nasty stain that's tough to deal with. I've tried everything after a rocker gasket let loose during a rally, and nothing really works. I've tried all of these Simply Green, S100 Motor Brighten, brake cleaner, TarnX, Brasso, and only succeeded in make it fade a shade or two. Kind of blows my mind that the finish can't resist it's own internal lubricant, especially with the history of oil leaks on these damn things. Shouldn't be this difficult.    >:(

Try one of the oxyclean products that bleach out stains without chlorine.

PJ-1 makes the stains just disappear!  Like magic.  Nite-Al & I both use it on the silver cased engines and have had fantastic results for those stubborn stains that soap and de-greasers wouldn't touch.  I can't figure where the dirty stains goes when you spray it with the PJ-1, it just disappears.  Go figure. Isn't PJ-1 just a chain lubricant?  How do you use it?
