My 103 is misbehaving and stalling out
« on: August 15, 2010, 11:55:59 PM »

My 2000 SERG 103 has been giving me some trouble.  It idles very slow ( approx 800 rpm) and will stall out at stops.  Some times it will idle slow at a stop, but when I try to throttle up it spits out of the breather and stalls out.  I have cleaned the K&N filter and pulled the plugs out and they look to be burning perfectly.  Before I roll into my stealership I wonder if any of you have some helpful thoughts ?

did you get an error code?

I had those symptoms once, cause was a loose manifold.

Check for an intake leak at the manifold.

I'm sure you're doing it already but just to be secure I'll mention the obvious.  Idle that low might starve for oil pressure.  Keep an eye on the oil pressure.

As for the idling problem itself, the Marelli bikes sometimes had quirky idle problems.  If yours is a sudden onset thing it's not likely any of the issues that troubled Marelli bikes though.

The obvious things you've likely already checked are the intake seals for tightness and/or leaking.  Fuel filters will usually first start showing signs of problem when the engine is under a load rather than at idle.  Same way with a leaking line inside the tank.

I have seen the pressure line from the tank to the fuel block collapse internally.  More pressure pushes through fuel a little better.  Less it starves.  Again, not likely.  But worth at least keeping in mind.

The IAT (intake air temp) sensor is worth looking closely at too.  The sensor itself may not be bad but the itty bitty gasket on those will fail.  Especially if the screws have backed off a bit.  If that gasket leaks it's a vacuum leak and will cause an erratic idle.  If you're questioning the gasket it's not available separately (or at least it didn't used to be).  Only with the IAT sensor.

If you do anything that causes you to actually need to adjust the idle when you're done (yes, you can do that on the Marelli bikes--adjustment hole through the bottom right corner of the intake you'll see when the air cleaner is off) be aware that you have to do than just twist the adjustment screw.  Once you've set it where you want it you need to pull the fuse to the ECM for several minutes before restarting the bike.

To follow up on the advice given by Twoland and CVOMOE - along the same line of thought - check for a crack in your exhaust also...  I once broke a tab off a header, opening up a quarter size hole near the rear cylinder.  This caused it to run rough at low rpm and resulted in very low idle (around 750 RPM), so low it would occaisonally die.  Just a thought...

Today I checked all the intake gaskets for any leaks (used a method with WD 40 sprayed around the gaskets to see if any was being sucked into the chamber) and did not find any problems.  The only problem I did find was the nut that holds the cold idle mechanism together was missing as well as the locking washer that holds the nut secure.  My Stealership would not sell me just the nut and washer I would have to order a full kit for $ 130.00 so I MacGiyvered it and also adjusted the idle up to 1000 rpm's.  We went out for a 3 hr. test ride and it didn't stall out once...  not even a sputter back through the breather,  so I am hoping that this solved my problems.  Now if any of you happen to have a spare part of the proper nut and lock (folding over)washer laying around in the top of your tool box I would appreciate a PM if you wouldn't mind.

Thanks for all the help fella's

I just checked the drawers and didn't have a Marelli TB being cannibalized.  Check eBay listing # 200507186552.  $83 for a TB you could cannibalize for the parts you want and also have spare lines and other bits.
