Check out the amount of metal on primary drain plug!
« on: August 25, 2010, 08:08:27 PM »

I'm once again turning to my fellow forum members for assistance.  I have over 35K miles on my 08 SERK and I've been no stranger to mechanical failures and disappointments since I purchased it new. I was changing my fluids last Saturday evening and I was shocked to see the amount of metal on the primary drain plug. I sent the same photo below to the HD service manager along with some detailed info on  issues I have been having recently. My e-mail to him explained that I was once again having starting issues and that I was hearing a noise while it was in neutral or when downshifting slowly into first gear. It's like a whining sound but without much of a load, if that makes sense. I had a new starter, front rotors and the TBW replaced in early July. The service manager called me right away and told me to bring it in ASAP. Since it has been raining it is still in my garage. I have always used Redline in the tranny and Amsoil in the other 2 holes. Only the primary plug had any metal on it, the others were remarkably clean considering it sounds like it is ready to come apart.

Any ideas on what this is from?  And what is required to do a thorough repair? Hopefully this will be covered under my extended service plan.  Since the amount of noise has been increasing in numerous areas of the motor, I fully expected the motor to crap out at any time now so I have been babying the bike to get through the Fall and have the motor rebuilt this winter.  I'm 99.9% sure come cold weather it will need rebuilding. I'm also considering having the gearing changed so it doesn't feel like I'm taking off in second gear.

I would appreciate any input on how to proceed with this.

Thanks,

Ray G.

You have the ESP, time to find out if your dealer will "do the right thing"!
Good luck!

Have you had the recall completed? On my 2007 FXSTSSE Springer I had starting problems (ACR's defective, replaced twice). Then after the 6th time to the dealers on the recall, the Factory Rep said............... NEW 2009 Engine with my VIN. Been running great ever since. Look on this site under springers and search for rbaker to see the details.

Good luck............

Richard

Ray, those pieces look like they originated from a bearing cage.

I agree. The chunks look like pieces from the cage.

Could possibly have spun the  spline out of the rotor. Don't ask me why I say this.

Due to the amount of BS on this topic I will attempt to do in in two parts. Yesterday I went to the dealership and found all the mechanics assembling to have lunch. I gave the guys an enlarged photo of the drain plug to look at.  They look at the photo and not a word & just continue to eat.  I asked the Sm what he thought so he asked his #1 motor builder what he thought. You Guys are going to die!!!!!!!!
That is NORMAL perfectly normal. So whats your problem, we see this 10 to 12 times every day. I went along knowing they were just joking around. WRONG, they were serious. How many miles? I said 35K plus, the foremen replied you should count youself lucky, most guys don't ride that in 10 years. Something unusual happened rather than get angry and do something I would later regret a calming effect came over me, I was in control of this situation and I was going to give them all the rope they wanted to hang themselves. My wife was present as well as a customer pretending to be working on his bike.  I waited an hour for them to finish their lunch when the SM came over to me and said Ray your still here whats up. I said whats up! how about some kind of explanation on the drain plug and where do we go from here. I told him I had owned 28 motorcycles and this was the first time I had this much chit come out of the primary and be told it's normal! their was allot more metal in the bath that couldn't fit on the magnet. I reminded him that he asked me to come down ASAP so he could look at it and listen to the noise while it was in neutral and when slowly downshifting, he took it out for a test ride ripping up the parking lot and came back and told us, man that is one fast and sweet running 110. What about the noise? I couldn't hear it!. I said of course you couldn't hear it you were going to fast. At this point he was at a loss for words, I told him about his forman giving my wife and I a chitty smirky look, with wise ass remarks every few minutes but he was in such an awkward position he stood with his mechanics "this is normal story" and said I don't see a problem. Why don't you bring it back when it is really broken, he just looked at me and said do you understand what I'm saying! I just said if you mean what I think you mean you just gave candy to a kid.  My wife was just amazed at the whole situation, her comment was why didn't just one person come over to make you feel comfortable that it would be taken care off?  Instead they passed the photo around and made comments with the occasional laughter. I just can't believe how calm I was. I guess it's because I know it's over with HD for me.

I went over to the the guy who was listening to the whole thing and asked him, did he just tell me to bring it back in pieces so they could fix it, he said "that's pretty much what I heard, have fun"

Sorry this was so long, but it just defines how the moco is going, Jerry's opinion has been so true, don't buy new until they learn to make a quality product.

You have metal that is not normal and noise, have an extended warranty, so I would take the bike to a dealer that will pull the primary cover and take the compensator and clutch basket apart.

We don't have xray vision like the medical field.
