Bad rods
« on: August 26, 2010, 11:17:49 PM »

Well have the bike in the shop to have the recalled heads, Andrews 54 cams and sert dyno tuned and was contacted by the dealer for him to tell me that upon breakdown of the engine, that the connecting rods were bad and would have to be replaced(too loose or sticking). also, that they would replace the flywheel and other associated parts for 50 dollar warranty fee. They questioned my having the heads replaced to begin with due to the fact that at 29 k on the bike, i had no leaks at all. now i'm glad i had them tear it down(despite loosing 2 weeks of riding).

Pistons look good and was only going to have them replace the rings and hone the cylinders and have basically a new motor for next to nothing but now am weighing in on replacing the pistons with the se 10.5-1 variety.

Looking for insight and wisdom on the pro's and con's.

Thanks

Service contract or warranty?  Cheap if it's a service contract as many have higher deductibles than that.  If it's factory warranty, however, you're getting hosed.

You're making out exceptionally well.  That's my thought :2vrolijk_21: .

A service contract that was tossed in as part of the sale is now saving you big bucks on a rebuild or engine replacement.  Give 'em the $50 and whistle on the way home.  Good luck on the shop getting it all buttoned up quickly and done well too.

As for the 10.5:1 piston question, why do you want to do that?  Are you planning other changes that will be compatible with the higher compression, like cams?  If all you do is bump up the compression, you will be creating a ping monster that will run hot.

I completely agree with Jerry,

Making the bike possibly more unreliable needless to say "Starter monster eater" and pinging in the summer when gets hot (already hot enough). (9.5 - 9.8 is manageable)  Andrews 54 cam (I have) is a low torque cam works well, but not a racing cam.

I would give more thought to this.
