Barring a universal translator to allow one to talk with the deer how would you ever really know for sure...

Unfortunately it has happened several times in our area this year.   Deer and cell phones are my worst fear.

I readily admit a few times over the years I was sure I could talk to all the animals great and small.  But never when I was in any shape to drive....  ;)

Man, y'all bringin' me down! That's one of my biggest nightmares. <----- Shuddering n shakin' head side to side. There's just some roads I will not take after dark. I've found that it's not just at sunrise and sunset. Deer are most active from around 2am to just after daylight. At least in the sticks that's how it is. And typically in the same spots over and over again. If ya just gotta take those roads ya just gotta slow down.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A deadly Labor Day crash in Harrison County, IN is being blamed on a deer.

According to the Harrison County Police Department, the crash happened around 1:35 p.m. when a car driven by Denae Mattingly of Lanesville swerved to avoid a deer. Mattingly lost control of her 2000 Honda Accord, crossed the center line and hit a motorcycle traveling in the other direction.

The motorcycle driver, 44-year old Alfred Overton of Elizabeth, IN, died at the scene. A passenger on the motorcycle, Dana Overton, along with Mattingly and ca juvenile passenger were all taken to University Hospital with injuries.

My biggest fear. Only so much vigilance one can maintain. I avoid certain roads. I follow the dawn amd dusk rule.  At some level, it's in the box of fatalistic notions you confront when you ride.

I hit a Bambi July 3rd 2003 while on my 2002 Nt train while riding with my wife. Yes, it was approaching dusk and yes this was a known deer crossing. I was lucky. Running at 55 the silly thing came out of the right ditch and try to beat me to point "A". We got there at the same time and Bambi was killed and we never went down. Like I say I was Lucky, held my line and puckered up for impact. Since then I was thinking the odds were with me that I would never see another deer; WRONG. Last year 70 mph interstate and I just caught a glimpse of a big one crossing the 4th lane (west) and jumping a fence and gone. Immediately, I turned my eyes to where it must have came from (east) and there it was (where theres one theres more). I slowed my 08 RG down and swerved to the passing lane and luckily it stopped, slipped on the road and fell. I went around it on the left, my buddy around it on the right but my brother-in-law came thru 3-4 seconds later and the deer was up and headed back to the east and he popped it. minimal damage, nobody hurt, no bikes down. The deer got up again and ran away. Yes it was 1/2hr after dusk. Now I ride a 09 SERG with anti lock brakes and at dusk and dark I ride with 2 fingers on the brake and my rt foot in a position to react fast. If I have time to slow/stop/avoid (plan A) I will, if not I'll squeeze my tank, butt cheeks (pucker up) and hang on tite while maintaining a straight line (like has worked before with Bambi, raccoon, possum and a very large turtle). The stupid deer have crossed in front of my jack up Silverado too, left them in the ditch with 4 hoofs pointing to the sky. Had I been on my bike I fear it would be me lying eye to the sky.

On the way home from work tonight 9:00 pm. Saw something moving on the left side of a dark two lane road. Let off the gas, and sure enough Bambis father runs across 10' in front of me. Glad I saw something suspicious and had let off of the throttle.

Keats, I am also very concerned about hitting a deer, and try to not ride when they are most likely out. I noticed last year on a trip  that deer like to mix in  with cattle and once during my trip I was delayed 2 hours  and   got caught crossing a pass road during late dusk into complete darkness. This happened in  Utah on Highway 12 beween Boulder, Utah, and Torrey, Utah( my destination for the day). Like a lot of the guys have mentioned I slow down and look for glowing eyeballs on the side of the road as dusk approaches. As I was slowly making my way over the pass (it is beautiful in the daytime) I had to stop for a herd of cattle crossing the road. It was pretty scary because a few of them were also  in back of us and to my surprise there were quite a few deer mixed in with them.(no Bucks)  I let the bike idle and when one of them would get close I would hit the horn. None of them were closer then 20 feet. After a few minutes they made their way past us without incident and away we went very slowly (got to Torrey about 9:30P.M.). I did have to slow down and stop a couple of more times on the down hill part of the pass because I would see a deer on the shoulder of the road and sure enough there would be a couple more trailing behind. I noticed on a couple of occassions before a deer would move, it would move its head to the right and then jerk back and go left. I thought that was kind of wierd. Sorry for the lenghty post, but I thought the experience was worth  passing on. Things like this are scarey, but it is also what makes riding a motorcycle an adventure as opposed to just getting from one point to another in a car. CAHDBIKER  P.S. Don't forget about all the Antelope

I think any deer within 2 miles of a paved road should be open season.
