Trade In Value
« on: September 05, 2010, 03:07:19 PM »

I was at my dealer last week where I purchased my 2010 Conv back in November. I was looking at a 2011 CVO Street Glide . Nice I was interested . He wanted list price no add on prices and knocked off the freight and setup.

My Conv. has 2300 miles, bike is perfect, Kuriakin Highway pegs, Reinhart exhaust, SE Race tuner, luggage rack, Sundowner seat, Fat Boy Windshield and all the original stuff, and 2 year extended warranty.

He offered me a grand total of 20,000 for my bike. Basically wholesale , nothing for the extras and wanted full list for the Street Glide with no options on the bike.

I declined and was kinda surprised at the offer. I thought my Conv would not have lost almost $10,000 in less than a year.

Opinions are welcome.

Thanks

Not surprised by that at all.... that's a normal practice by most dealers. You'll notice a lot of members here will take off their accessories to either install on their next bike or sell them all together because most dealers will not give them any extra on trade ins.

Doesn't matter if you only bought it a couple months ago or back in July '09 when they were introduced it's still a model year old. Just checked NADA and they are showing low retail (w/o any options selected) as $20,695. Sad thing about owning these bikes is they will never be worth as much to others (especially dealers that are going to resell them with the hopes of turning a profit) as they are to the owner that has put his personal touch in/on it.

BTW - I'm not agreeing with this practice (one of the reasons I still have my bike and not looking to trade it in) it's just the way it is. :( Your best bet if you want to get rid of it is try selling it out right.... but don't expect to recoup all you've put in it that way either as this is a buyers market these days.

I was surprised just last night by the offer my dealer made on the red bike Gary.  Was actually very interested in all the detail and some of the very unique changes.  Even more so by the way it ran.  Offered not just more than I paid for the bike new but close to what I have in it with all the work.  Then of course I woke up and the dream was over.  Then I went for a ride and for the life of me couldn't figure out why I was even dreaming about talking to a dealer about selling that bike....  :2vrolijk_21:

Must have been something you drank... no way in the world the Don I know would be thinking about trading his red (any of them) bike in to a dealer. :shocked2:

I was not trying to recoup all that I have into the bike. By trading a bike you save on the sales tax that is 8%. Even on 20,000 that is 1600.00 you save just in sales tax and less aggravation trying to sell it. The point I was trying to make is that Harleys just don't hold their value like they use to.

Not sure what the actual percentage is but any vehicle will loose more of it's value in the first year then all the years thereafter. Now being the state of the present economy I'd venture to say that percentage has gone up some... as was just posted... "Welcome to 2010". :(

Hi, you could organize to trade it in Europe, if you solve problems like expedition and payment risk you could earn much more here, I think the price for your bike could be around 25K euros which means approx the price you paid last year. The problem here is the time, if you want to buy a CVO you have to wait at the least 6 months so most people could take in consideration to buy a good used bike. The price of the new Conv is more than 30K  euros now so 25K is a pretty good bargain for us.

I had the same thing happen with my '09 CVO Springer - really sort of a niche bike after all.  The thing is, they give you $20K on a trade, then they stick a price on it of $27,500 (because they can't price it too close to the new CVO Softails) leaving them a little room to dicker on the price and still make a healthy profit.  You'll never get the true worth of your bike if trading in.  You could always sell it on your own, but that can be a hassle (especially if your new bike is already at the dealers).  So, you pay a bit of a premium in order to trade up.....you can always make more $$$, right? ;)

Well ... as the guy who kept his FLSTSE for six weeks and did trade it for an '11 SESG I feel somehow compelled to weigh in ... :)  I did exactly the same thing only I had 2600 miles and took off all of my extras and many of my fellow cvo'ers have them (thanks guys) ... I talked to a lot of dealers, and seperating the bunk from what I think were actual good points they made;

1. In the northeast touring bikes are stronger later in the season.
2. The CVO is a lot of money for a softail
3. Most CVO buyers trend towards buying new
4. The changes to the FLSTSE (the bags, the throttle, cruise, abs, etc etc) are pretty substantial

With all that being said, I did better than $20k ... ... Granted that was in August, and it was before the dealers realized their second shipments were on production hold ..

Let me know if I can help with any more details.  I now have right around 2600 on the SESG :)!

Frankly I think a $20K offer against straight MSRP was pretty damn generous.  My money is on you'll have a hard time selling it for much if any more.  Forget the accessories, in yesteryears markets, maybe a decade ago, accessories made a slight difference, maybe 25 to as much as 50% value depending on area of the country and time of year.  Keep in mind that was when Harley's didn't depreciate.  Forget about that now.  Today's market, zilch if the buyer doesn't mind, but in fact could lower value as he has to take them off if he doesn't agree with your tastes.

It is a buyers market used and even new.  Maybe make a slight better deal for the new one cash, then cross your fingers you can sell yours for more.  I wouldn't risk it.

Frankly, I don't know why someone would want to trade one year later anyway... but with only 2300 miles on it it's possibly more a statement to have the latest and greatest.
