Cheap insurance, my speedometer and gas gauge crapped out on me last year and I was pushing my bike in 95 degree weather.  Bike after bike drove right past me, finally a twice disabled vet in a pick up pulled over and took me to a gas station and back to the bike.  He rode a Honda Goldwing and never gave me any BS.  I tried to pay him but he gave me that evil eye and said just pass the favor along.  I'll never forget him, he was wearing special clothing to not irritate the wound area from the shrapnel all over his arms, torso and legs.  Hell of a an American!

I'll have one for sure, pushing is not my kind of cardio workout.

On the surface seems like a good product and a good plan but as a firefighter/ems (retired) not so sure I want extra fuel in a saddlebag. Just sayin. Ride Hard/Ride Safe

I've only got 5 gal but in any case sometimes you do something stupid like not getting gas when you stop for lunch or take a break because you intend to stop again later only to find that when you do stop again - no fuel.  Times I've come close is not because I rode the entire tank out it was because I did not get gas when I had the chance.

I hear you and I thought of that.  But you've got 5 or 6 gallons in the tank that could spill.  Those saddlebags (the fiberglass/plastic ones for sure) are pretty tough and offer protection.  Can't say a direct impact could not rupture the fuel container but I don't see it as a big issue for me personally.  As with all things in life everyone has to make their own decision after weighing the pros and cons.

For years I have carried extra fuel in the 16oz red MSR bottles in case I or a fellow rider should need this.  But Ron Reda's gas can holds twice as much as these two bottles I carry in a heck of a lot less (and more convenient) storage space.

Carried (and used) the MSR bottles for years... this is a nice (and bigger capacity) alternative... ordered one of these, and now I can leave the MSR bottles on my BMW GS. Just saw these on a different board, and came here to share... but luckily did a search first, and found your thread.

The low fuel light on the SERG SUCKS!! Unless it is dark, it is sp dim it is completely useless... I've cut it close a few times!

If you go down hard enough to rupture this can inside your saddle bag, you've got bigger problems.... and you're probably nowhere near your bike... lol

Had a total of 11.5 gallons on my wing (aux fuel cell) and often rode non-stop between fillups. Of course if you can't make it that long, there's always the staduim pal! http://www.stadiumpal.com/  (yes, I do know some of the elite, most hard-core LD riders that use them)

That looks like something NASA would design. As a matter of fact, I can see how it could be adapted so an astronaut could go long distances, like Texas to Florida non stop.

Why would you wear one of those when it takes all of one minute to stop on the side of the road and pee, especially out in the middle of no where?

probably closer to 5 minutes by the time you drop speed, park, take off a glove or two, find the little fella under your riding gear, get things squared away, put gloves back on, and get back up to speed. To the people that use them, 5 minutes (per time, spread of the course of several days) could be the difference in missing a time gate, setting a world record, winning a rally, or completing a ride.

It isn't limited to carrying GAS!!! You can put anything you want in it.. Piss, Booze..etc.

Just don't get confused and forget what you put in it last.

I used to carry extra gas years ago when all I had was my Suzuki 1400 for transportation and rode everyday (4 gallon tank). Today, since I can go about 200 miles on a tank of gas, there's no need for it.  As for others that may need it, fill up in the morning and get more after 200 miles. Sorry, but riding around with a gas can in my saddlebag just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm pretty sure if I got one of these it would be the intent of "only for road trips."  For long trips.  Would have no intent of using it regularly or locally.  So it would set on a shelf or in a cabinet somewhere 97% of the time.  Then would come the long trip and I'd blow it off.  Then some day somewhere I'd actually run out gas and be doubly pissed off for both running out and not having the gas can that was at home filled with dirt with a flower sticking out of it setting on the shelf over the toilet in the shop (because it would look appropriate there).  So being that I'd rather be singly pissed off rather than doubly so I must pass in pursuit of some future day's mental health.
