My father in law was a member of the 383d Bombardment Group, 884 Bombardment Squadron, trained at Walker Army Airfield, Second Air Force, Victoria, Kansas.  He was an aerial gunner/nose gunner on B17, B24 and B29's from April 1943 to May 1946.  The squadron was based in Tinian in September 1945 after the Japanese surrender and dropped food and supplies to Allied prisoners in Japan, Korea, China, and Formosa.

He really enjoyed seeing this video clip.  I thank you for him.....   :2vrolijk_21:

He must have nerves of steel, being a nose gunner puts you right up front with all the action.  Tell him I am glad he enjoyed it and thank him for protecting all of us back home he is indeed a honerable man.

My father was a B-17 pilot in Europe, flying out of Bury St. Edwards, England.  He, and his crew, were shot down 3 times, and most of them did not make it home - he was one of the lucky ones.  They were the recipients of numerous medals.  He would never talk much about the war - too many bad memories.

It will always amaze me what a bunch of young, patriotic, brave kids are able to accomplish in the horor's of war.

God bless all the hero's that have made the sacrifice to enable The United States to truly be the "Home of the Brave, and the Land of the Free"

Talk about timing, I was just looking at the opportunity to fly on the EAA's B-17 during its upcoming visit to Atlanta.  Here's the schedule for trips:

He doesn't talk about it to much, but when he does it is always very emotional for him and very interesting for me.

Hey bud,

I met this Massachusetts native when I visited the planes a few weeks back in NH.

www.johnkatsaros.com

He was shot down, taken prisoner and escaped twice.  I bought his book, Code Burgundy.  He was a hot chit, too.
