It is a dealer.  I spoke to the GM on the phone and he is the one who said cam tensioner springs.  I havenot spoken to the mechanic yet but will.  Additionally, I will have them write it all down.  Thanks foor the advice and another sleepless night.

Cam chain tensioner springs?  On an 09 SERG?  Not likely....in fact highly unlikely.    ???

I'd ask a bunch of questions as to how this was diagnosed.  They are guessing.

Those springs are not the issue
I guarentee it, never hear of or seen one fail. There is nearly no stress on them when the motor is running

Thanks.  Trying to get the dealer's mechanic to call me back.  I spoke to the parts guy, only one that would answer the phone, and he said there is a spring in there.  He recognized that it is hydraulic but that there is a spring and it was fully compressed.  As a result the chain was slack and was skipping a tooth and that caused the tink noise I heard.  I am still waiting for the mechanic to call back.  Thanks for all the advice.

Do you STILL have this issue? Even after a tune?  :nixweiss:

Reason I ask is that we had a 2011 that had the same symptoms after the dealer "Stage one" download and "tune" out here. Rider was not happy.
He made the decision to go with TTS, and we played with the spark tables. Problem gone!
 :2vrolijk_21:

It's still here,I don't know what it is. Did I have the noise before Tune ? Don't remember. I don't think it's the tune.. It's the sound of stones in fender, tinging sound. I believe it's in the motor. I've got another year left on warrantee with 25,000 miles on bike.. I'll keep a close eye on the situation, and if anyone else has this sound and figures it out please pass on the information... Thanks

Haven't ruled out anything... If it's pinging it's got me fooled, as when I go on a load an crank it on it doesn't make the sound. It's when your just crusing about 70 mph. I'll play around and try to make it make the noise. Thank for any information..

There is a lightweight spring that just holds the shoe against the chain until the hydraulics take over.  There have been some instances of improperly assembled hydraulic tensioners, so perhaps that is what they were talking about.  In fact, I believe there is a thread or two around here with pictures of improperly assembled tensioners.  If you look at the attached drawing you will see the spring.

It COULD  be timing too far advanced at low MAP values.......thus pinging at 70 under cruise conditons. Timing is usually pulled way back under high MAP, low RPM.
Just guessing here, but, I've had a similar issue on my '09 that drove me nuts until I took some time to find my mistake!
Keep us posted when you find the actual problem AND the fix!

Good luck! :nixweiss:

Like wise for me, like stones in fender, allmost like timing advanced too much.. Have you found the reason ??

No, perhaps in 4 weeks.
The bike is not tuned, no TTS or PC.

GRC, what you have posted is what they are saying.  The dealer is replacing the primary and secondary tensioners and then i will see.  The mechanic said there appeared to be no additional damage.

I picked up the bike and it sounded GREAT.  Time will tell but the noise and hard starting are GONE. :mango:

Update.  The noise is back but the hard starting in gone.  I have a new noise and the mechanics says he thinks it is a lifter issue, so back into the motot they go.  Another week without my bike.

Could be piston slap... if you are hearing the noise between 2200 - 2800, rpm look into that.
