Harley davidson 20-50W.  Oil pressure is much better.  Changing syntheic every 3K seems like over kill.  I think everybody should use whatever makes you feel good.

I use amsoil, and only change it every 5000. I used to use mobil one, then swithced to syn 3 when it came out and now have changed to amsoil for everything.

This is an old thread, so I don't know if anybody will see this, but check out this story  El Cajon H-D in San Diego county is changing the Syn3 delievered in new bikes to regular H-D 20/50 at the 1k service telling the owners the top end won't seat with Syn3 and recommending owners keep regular oil in the bike till 5k and then swap back to Syn3 since they say the chain tensioner pads for the cam chain wear out if you don't use Syn3. ???????????????

As an addition to my previous post, maybe someone would like to give the folks at El Cajon this gem from the 70's to add to their list of BS.

spiderman,

I would suggest that the folks at El Cajon H-D have been smoking certain illegal substances.

Engine & primary = Amzoil
Transmission = Redline Gear Oil

Engine changed every 2500, Primary & Transmission changed every 5000

I don't use Syn3 any more.  That was a one-oil change flirtation.  Hot weather and sloppy shifting convinced me that it didn't belong in the transmission.

I now use Amsoil 20w50 in the crankcase and primary and Amsoil 75w90 gear oil in the transmission.

However, since nobody local stocks Amsoil in my new home town, I'm probably switching to Mobil 1 V-Twin at the next oil change.  I can get it at the local Advance Auto Parts store.  And since I'm anal about this stuff, I might put it in the primary and Mobil 1 gear lube in the transmission as well.

You may want to double check with your Advance Auto folks - that's where I was buying it, but as of July they stopped carrying it.

I was just there last week.  Thanks for the tip--I guess I should hurry up a buy a case before they drop it?  Or I guess I could just mail order Amsoil.

Oh chit, I gotta go public and agree with Hubbard on something. - - - - Filling a new motor with regular oil and droppin it at 250-300 miles is the the tried and true way to break in a motor with forged pistons and close tolerance rings. If you dip your fingers in the oil you drain out and rub them together you'll understand why.

As to the story about El Cajon H-D - -

A buddy down the street just got his first ever BRAND NEW H-D at 62 after a lifetime of riding used. He'd probably stick his finger up his _ _ _ and spin circles if the dealer told him to he is so excited to have a "virgin"
