Fullsac Stage II 54 cam 2011 103 LTD dyno test! 25+ HP gain!
« on: October 23, 2010, 11:49:37 AM »

The 2011s are starting to trickle in. Here's the first 2011 103 dyno runs. A nice purple one.

Run 5.
The base line. I have to say, this was the weakest (and ugliest) stock bike I have ever seen. I was a little concerned only seeing
65HP from a 103. I told the customer, 80 HP stage I no problem. It wasn't looking good right from the start.
Was it the Purple?

Run 8.
Bolted on my X Pipe, recored the stock mufflers with 2.0 baffles, Ness AC and downloaded  my TTS/Fullsac stage I base map from
a 2010 103 LTD. The map was real close. Made a few tweaks to get the AFR perfect. Only made a pathetic 73HP and 84 TQ?
I'm thinking oh no, customer in not going to be happy. What has Harley done now? The last 2010 103 I did with the same parts made 81 HP and 98TQ.
Made a phone call, suggested some 54 cams, customer said do it!

Run 30.
Installed a set of Andrews 54s. Pulled the heads and slipped in a set of Cometic .030 head gaskets. Slipped the stock pushrods back in.
3 sessions of V Tune, 20 pulls to get the AFRs flat. Wow! 93HP and 99TQ! 20 HP increase! 15 TQ!
For me, this raises more questions than it gives answers. 20 HP gain for a cam swap?
Yes, the .030 gaskets were good for a couple of points. Still, I have never seen anything like this before.
Are the 2011 96-103 cams different? The Throttle body sure is. Much smaller runners with some sharp edges that are begging for the porting tool.

So, the final numbers look great! The torque curve is absolutely beautiful, bike runs awesome, customer is happy!
But I'm still scratching my head? The first 2011 CVO I did was little on the low side too. Are we seeing a trend
with the 2011s? Maybe too soon to say. Anyone else have 2011 dyno numbers to share? Are Purple bikes the slowest?

Steve..I will be calling in the next few weeks to get baffles for my 2011 SESG and I have a question. I already have the X pipe and am leaning towards another TTS, is it worth getting a new throttle body as well???? Not sure if I want to open things up and do cams right away, but am thinking of doing a throttle body if it will help.

The new 2011 TB has same 50mm butterfly, but the plenum volume is greatly reduced with some nasty casting flaws.
Once ported, it may be the hot ticket for throttle responce and bottom end? I would not even consider replacing it something larger until
you had cams and proven headwork. Even then you will only see a few points up top.

Steve

Have you done your stage 2 on an 2011 110 yet? Loving the results from my X pipe and 2" cores!

Have not done any cams in the 2011 110s yet. Will be testing a woods TW7 vs 54 in my own 107" soon.
Should be interesting.

I agree Jeff.
Steve, how modified is your 107? (heads, pistons, compression)
Should be a great comparison.

Hey Steve, what's a fair price for a set of cams (either the Andrews 54 or the Woods TW-7H), including install and headwork?

While one is at it, sounds like intake porting would make it a perfect storm- what would the cost of that be roughly?

Also, do you recommend the .030 gasket that I hear so much about? What does that do- raise compression a bit?

The .030 gasket reduces the squish clearance about .020 thou bringing us from approximately .060 to .040 clearance between the piston
and head at top dead center. Typical stock piston is about .08 to.10 in the hole, plus the .030 gasket = .040.
Its not the slight bump in compression that we are really benefitting from. Tighter squish increases turbulence at TDC while forcing more
of the fuel to the center of the chamber where all the action is. (AKA spark plug) Loose squish allows a percentage of the charge to lay dormant and
unused at the outer edge of the piston. Lean pockets at the outer edge are also prone to detonation. At TDC the fuel has already been
burning for 20-30 degrees of rotation. increasing turbulence at TDC helps mix the burning fuel charge accelerating the rate of combustion.
Its kinda like fanning the fire to make is spread faster.
In a piston engine, accelerating the rate of burn (increasing cylinder pressure) after TDC is a very good thing.

Now, moving away from the Nascar engine lab and back to our world. How much of a gain is it really worth on a Harley?
If I'm installing cams, I'm using the stock solid push rods. Thats means pulling the tanks and rocker covers. At this point, its only another
hour to pull the heads and go with the .030 gaskets. 2-3 HP? maybe? Engine building 101, tight squish is better.
For an hour more, I'm doing it and keeping the 3 piece pushrod money on my pocket.
Would I tear an engine down just to swap in .030 gaskets?
Hell no. But if I'm doing cams, the head are coming off for the gaskets.  :2vrolijk_21:

Cams prices? Woods are pricey>>>>> Call me for a quote.

Thanks Steve, but I won't waste your time by having you get me a quote because as much as I'd love for you to work on my bike, I live nowhere near you.

$$$ depending, I thought next year I would do cams/headwork/.030 gasket/possible intake porting, so I was just curious of a ball park figure as to how much the total cost would be.
