Engine Rattle
« on: October 26, 2010, 03:50:03 PM »

I installed a new exhaust system on my 2011 SESG about 2 weeks ago. I put on a V&H Power Duals and V&H Hi output mufflers. The bike has developed a occasional rattle in the engine.

I thought I read here somewhere that someone developed a throttle body rattle when he changed his exhaust system.

If so can this cause damage and how is it corrected?

Check to see if any of the screw clamps holding your exhaust chrome covers is slightly loose. Maybe the shop forgot to fully tighten one.

Not enough information.  Did you just install the pipes without any other changes, or did you retune as well?  Could that "rattle" really be "pinging" due to a lean mixture?  Since stock bikes have a tendency to ping on acceleration, anything you do that might lean out the mixture could make it worse/more noticeable.

Did you do the pipe install yourself, or did you have a shop do it?  Either way, if you're talking about a real rattle and not pinging, I'd go over the entire install and make sure there are no loose parts or fasteners, and that everything is properly aligned and nothing is able to ground out on other parts as the engine moves in the mounts.

Its not a ping. I know what a ping is. All the connections are tight, thats the first thing I looked at. The bike didn't have enough miles for a dyno tune so a base map was installed. The bike is def. not running lean. The rattle is a occasional thing. I thought I read about a throttle plate rattle here somewhere. I was wondering if thats a possibility and if so what is the fix.

It also started about 1 week after the install. Not right away I'd say about 200 miles later.

Thanks

Try this thread, it discusses a TB noise that might be what you're thinking about.
