Electrical Gremlin in ignition
« on: October 30, 2010, 09:50:02 PM »

My friend Hank has been having fits with his nice 02 Road King. It all started when he had the motor bumped up to 88", installed a Reinhart exhaust system and a Power Commander. It seems it's never run quite right and he's taken it to the shop that did the work as well as a local H-D dealership and nobody can tell him what's wrong. Mostly the bike would run fine but every so often would shut down only to start right up once stopped. Now it's gotten to where it starts up, runs for a couple minutes and shuts down. When he pushes the starter button it starts right up only to shut down again. Between me, Beagle and Wardoc, we can't even figure out where to start looking. Any suggestions ?

Simple things first, unplug / bypass the PCIII and see if the problem stays. Any trouble codes?

beserker,     I have seen a lot of holes in fuel lines from rubbing on the inside of the fuel tank.

fuel pressure should be between 55psi and 62psi.    axil

BB,

I am leaning toward a faulty PC.  I have had to deal with three defective ones in the last two years. One would shut down the bike after a few seconds of idle. The replacement would cause bike not to crank on occasions when you were out of town on a long trip. Sometimes it would crank and hit just on one cylinder. Last time I did disconnect the PC and hooked up the original ECM.  Bike still would not crank until I reset the ECM by switching my ignition switch off and on five times within 30 seconds.  After this procedure it would immediately crank. Needless to say, after returning from Daytona I removed it for good and the bike runs great. Power Commanders are no longer a part of my biking.
