09 SERG Warped rotors and bad Alcoa oem rim
« on: November 02, 2010, 09:10:05 AM »

As some here know I've been wrestling with warped rotors on my 09 SERG. After a few temper tantrums I had the rotors replaced around 12k miles. I had run into the same rotor issue at about 18k.

Rather than continuing to deal with this issue I elected to seek out the composite rotors from Lyndall. After a couple of months, dealing with Paul Kitrell (sp?) (The President of the company) and trying to put his composite rotors on my 09 SERG the end result is they will not fit. Paul has went back to the drawing board on this but I digress.

Based on some info shared to me by Lyndall I asked that the rim be checked on a truing stand. The rim was out and service contacted the MOCO. The MOCO informed the dealer that Alcoa had experienced a few issues and that the rim would be warrantied.

New rim and oem brakes have been installed. Hope to pick up the bike later today or tomorrow and will have more specifics then. Maybe  :huepfenlol2:

Mine is in for the same thing, amongst many other things.

I'll drop them a line on the wheel info...

I picked up the bike last night. Shop foreman said that the rim was out .004. MOCO supplied new rim, rotors and pads. Just sharing for any member that may be having reoccurring rotor issues. Your rim might be worth a look  :2vrolijk_21:

Your rim would have to be out more than 0.004" for them to replace it. Most wheels are usually out 0.010"- 0.020", and I think the max runout allowed is 0.080". 0.004" for a brake rotor isn't even that terrible.

Depends on where you're measuring the wheel.  If you're measuring at the actual rim, the runout specification will be greater than it will be at the hub.  In the case of the recurring rotor warping issues, the important wheel measurement is at the rotor mounting points.  And this was a known problem a year ago.  BTW, Harley max tolerance for cast rim runout when measured at the bead surface; .040" lateral, .030" radial.  I'm not certain what they use for a spec at the rotor mounting location.

The max rotor runout spec from Harley has been .008" for many years, not certain what it is now but I assume they've probably jacked it up like they did with other nonessential parts like crankshafts.  For sake of comparison, the typical automotive brake rotor max runout spec (total runout measured while mounted on the hub) is in the range of .002" to .004" depending on manufacturer and model.

My 08 SERK warped 7 rotors before they reluctantly changed the wheel,  Jerry is right, mine was over .012 and uneven on the five rotor mounting points.

Sounds more like the rotor mounting points are not at the same levels causing the rotor to be pulled in an out of true position then leading to problems when brakes are applied.

So have you had enough miles to determine if your braking effort has increased?

I've only put a couple hundred miles on the bike since it's return. Only noticeable difference is it no longer feels as if I'm running moguls  ;)   :huepfenlol2:
