Anyone experienced a bad lifter?
« on: November 06, 2010, 04:54:53 PM »

Tick-tick-tick is driving me crazy on my 2008 CVO 110 with 22,000 miles. So loud at idle, people look.  A machanical person said bad lifter for sure. Dealer says normal-- naturally. Any ideas? It started on a crank up while on a trip and has never let up.  Idle to 2000 is worse but after that wind and noise drowns out the tick. Have extended warranty but dealer says if he goes into it and lifter is not the problem I will be charged.  Does not want to investigate from just the ticking noise.

Just had lifters replaced under warranty on my 2010 SEUC 110 motor. Had a bad rattle when cold and very noticable rattle between 2800 and 3500 RPM. Still has some noise between 2800 and 3500, but have not experienced the cold noise yet.  Only 300 miles since repairs.

Find a different dealer, or contact the ESP folks.  When a noise develops suddenly after 20k plus miles, it's not normal no matter what that idiot dealer told you.  Explain the sudden onset to the ESP folks, and point out to them that it will be much cheaper to fix it now rather than wait for a major failure that could trash the engine.  Sort of a switch on the old Fram commercial, they can pay a little now, or a lot later.

I agree with all that is stated above my post.

bad lifter on my 103 manifested as over night leak down of hydraulic lifter.  HARD TAP TAP TAP for 5 seconds following start up.

There was louder than normal tic during genearal operation, but most of that tic was able to compensate and remove by adjustable pushrods.

Heavy start up tap was finally eliminated when all four lifters were replaced.

Pardon my ignorance but who is ESP?  Thanks

ESP is what many incorrectly refer to as "extended warranty".  There should be a contact phone number in the paperwork you received when you bought the Extended Service Plan.  And in case you aren't aware, you don't have to use the dealer you bought the bike from.  Any Harley dealer is required to honor the plan, and many independents have also been approved to do work under the plan as well.

The dealer doesn't have the right to blow you off under the ESP any more than he does under the factory warranty; the decision rests with the ESP administrator as to whether or not they will investigate and fix your problem.  It appears you've already dealt with the horse's butt, now you need to go to the horse's mouth.  And if you don't get satisfaction, you still have legal rights you can pursue.  Read that contract carefully.

Mcdonaldroadcapt, my bike 09SEUC seems to have most of the typical valve train noises that a lot of guys on the site talk about. It is quiet when cold or hot at idle, at about 2200 RPMs very quiet. A little more valve noise between 2200 and 2800 RPMs. At about 80MPH in 6th it is very quiet. So far I am keeping my fingers crossed. However,I had a wierd thing happen twice.(Naturally I was several hundred miles from home). I started my bike ( both times it was between 65 to 70 degrees outside.( Just for the record I  use Redline 20/60. ) I let the bike warm up and took off. Everything was normal and then all of a sudden one lifter started to make noise like a small block chevy with a bent push rod. I backed off the throttle and then speeded up and it went away in about 15 to 20 seconds.  I went to the Dealer, I mean Stealer , I bought it from and they said after a brief test ride that eveything sounded normal. The first time this happened was at about 3500 miles then it happened at about 8000 miles. I only have about 8700 miles total on it since I usually ride my 95 Heritage locally. I am thinking some small particle of debri made the lifter collapse or it is just a crappy lifter. I think I will change them all out when something breaks and they have to do warranty repair ( hopefully not) or when I get about 20k and change out all the cam chain tensioners and chains, or maybe go to gear drives if my crank is straight enough.( I am considering this a maintaince procedure after what I have read on the site today.) Sorry to make such a long post, but I am baffled as to why this happened so intermittently and then pumped itself up. Has anyone else had this same thing happen? Other then this I have no complaints. Any insites, opinions. etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks CAHDBIKER

My ticking noise, whatever it is, can be heard from either side of the engine.  It is an extra ticking that is in conjunction with the usual loud pushrod movement.  Had it checked out by an independent and he too is baffled as to the culprit. I am like you in just riding it until something breaks loose and then my extended warranty can cover all new parts. Just hope that I am not on a long trip.

At 35K miles my '08 finally had to be rebuilt (extended warranty).  When they tore into the motor there were several issues.  One of them was a bad lifter.

Since I have 22,000 on mine I am wondering what other issues they found during the rebuild?

Thanks

Mine are getting replaced as we speak.  It started with the hard starting and ended up ticking as well as others issues.  This will be my second engine tear down hopefully they find the other issues as well.

My other issues were pitted cams, scored oil pump and bad flywheel.  The flywheel noise was why I took it in.  Added the SE compensator and billet cam plate in the rebuild.

Well let me second what everyone else had to say! 32000 miles and a bad lifter plus other things destroyed the motor! Been down for several weeks missing most of the end of our Eastern riding season.    Rebuild for $4700 or replace lifter for much less ???????One of the Bike magazines has a article were the author of the article states anyone who puts any miles on these bikes should replace the lifters every year! Now isn't that telling us something about these lifters!
