They are still the FAILURE PRONE HD style....I'm going with Heat Demons and the custom grips that I already have. I'm sure the Steath grips AND Heat Demons would be less than the HD heated Stealth grips too!

Dennis, I have used HD heated grips on 4 of my Harleys in the past, and never had any issue or have them fail.  While I wont say they are prefect, I think how they are installed will affect their working long term.

The left grip wire appears to enter the grip close to the inside corner of the grip.  If the grip is pressed too far, or too hard onto the bar, it very likely the end of the bar will cut or pierce that internal wire where it enters the grip.  That would cause the grips to fail.

Also, if the grip is pressed too far onto the bar, not leaving a gap from the end of the bar and that wire, vibration will eventually cut through the wire.  Same result: failure.  The instructions are clear not to press the gripp too far onto the bar.  I must be measured to ensure the bar end doesnt cut the wire.  I think this is where mistakes are made that render these useless.

The throttle grip  must also not be installed too far onto the bar, or it will cut into the wire on the throttle side.  Again, the instructions should state the precise measurement of how far to slide the grip onto teh bar.  Back that measurement off 1/4 inch, and I can almost guarantee no problems.

Also, dont pull hard on the wire when pulling through the bar inside.  Dont force the wire through the bar, although it can be a bugger to get the wires through with the TBW bikes.  It takes some wiggling and a little twisting.  But, dont leave twisted wires in there...untwist them before buttoning things together.  Also, make sure the throttle side has some slack, since that wire rotates with the grip.

IMO, its not a great design.  Its easy to short out these grips if pressed too far onto the bar.

JMO, HTH.  After 10 years of using these without issues, I really do beleive installation is key to long term life of the grips.

dcigar-
That part number (56729-08) is for the grips only.  :nixweiss:
It says the Stealth heated hand grips won't fit the flstse2 (56750-04B)

HD headed grips WILL absolutly somtimes FAIL , its just a matter of time.  This would also be the first time i have ever heard anyone recomend the HD heated grips.  I have personally gone through several sets and none failed because of installation issues. I still think They fail cause they are crap.  Expensive Crap,  that have had multiple recalls for the high failure rate, and still not resolved the problems  :soapbox:

Heat demons are one of the best known alturnatives to the HD heated grips .. and the only way to go in

my humble opinion.   ;D    Cheaper, more reliable, and use the grip of your choice

oh, jsut to add,  all sets that i installed were the stealth .. that was the scheme on my bike from the factory.    and the "chrome" rubs off ..  casue it aint.

that seems to me the generasl concensus , when i got my first heated grips, they were from a company that is since out of business called custom heated grips, from an ad about 10 years ago in iron horse magazine, as harley were not available then,
these were a copy of the harley foam grips and had on ly two set\tings hot a warm and ran through a reesistor and a switch placed anywhere you liked on the bike, but with ther throttle by wire it makes it a little more difficult, oh well as i said lucky summer is on the way

WOW,   two three recommendations/ testimonals  for HD grips on one thread ...  ;D     :nixweiss:

I know that nobody wants to steer our CVO brothers in the wrong direction and recomend somthing that would just wind up  failing and costing a brother money,  right?

What say we do an offical poll on failures on hd heated grips?

Im interested in knowing the truth,  are you?

If its just me having issues, i dont want to give the hd heated grips a bad rap any more than anyone would want to recomend a product that is not reliable,  correct?

we can start a seperate thread with poll.
Lets set some ground rules:
what is reasonable time before failure for a $200 grip?  less than 1y  2y  3y   4y  5y
we can list how many sets you have had that did and didnt fail
what is the reasonable perceentatge of failures before we should get mad?    10%  20% 30% 40%  50%  ?

anyone want to take the lead?

The ones on my 07 CUSE worked flawlessly for the four years I had the bike.  Never had them fail once.  Can't speak for the ones on my RUSE yet.  I've only used them twice so far.

ok,  i know when i whooped ..  ;D    i give up ..  i have modified my posts to reflect what i have leaned here.  All hd heated grips do not fail.   apparantly the three sets i have had that failed were either very unlucky or i am not good at installing them.    :drink:   no more posting on heated grips for me ..   :2vrolijk_21:
