Performance upgrade for 2010 Limited
« on: November 25, 2010, 10:16:59 AM »

Getting my Xmas shopping list together for Santa and I'm tossing around the idea for a complete performance upgrade for my 2010 Limited.

There's a huge difference in performance comparing my 09 serg to my 103 limited...  not that I would expect there to be any similarity given it's a stock 103.

My thought is to upgrade the exhaust, stage 1 and cams along with either TTS or a race tuner. Here's my wish list:
Thunderheader 2:1
SE Heavy Breather
255 Cams
TTS

From a performance point of view and trying to keep cost in mind, would this be good choice "or" a great choice to bring out the beast in a 2010 103 engine.?

I have done all you want to do except the cam, A TTS, and Tune. Happy with what I've done but I want to say WoW when I open up the throttle.. Now I can't. The Cam will make you say WoW.. I believe the TTS and a Tune will be a Great choice... Good Luck

I think I would opt for a Wood tw5-6 or Cyclerama 575. Either will equal the low end of the 255 but take command after 3,500 and pull to redline.

Call Steve George at Fullsac Performance........You won't be sorry. I'm running his Xpipe, Andrews 54 cams, Cometic .030 head gasket, TTS tuner, VH's Slash ovals with Steve's Fuel map. Pulls like a beast. Haven't gotten a dyno pull yet, but definitely exceeded my expectations.
My last 103 had SE255 cams. Horrible cams. Pinged it's ass off in heavy traffic.

I personally wouldn't consider the SE255 cams.  Don't forget, first and foremost they are an EPA compliant cam, not necessarily a true performance cam.  And as noted by Bob, the extremely early intake closing creates high pressures that can turn the engine into a hard starting hot running ping monster.  I think the aftermarket is the right place to be looking for cams, and there are many good choices out there.

Good stuff Fellas, thanks!

Steve is on my list of people to call...   running the TTS and Fullsac cores in my serg now and very happy...

Had a person whom I highly respect as a wrench tell me that the Thunderheader exhaust was as good as it could possibly get from stricktly a performance point of view...  I'm not a big fan of the look of the exhaust, I'm more concerned with how the bike will perform.

Just an FYI your bike has ACR solenoids similar to the SE110. Same motor as the 103 police.

I'll need some help understanding what that means...  is that a good thing or a bad thing..? And should that have an effect on the choices I make..?  I know the Police 103 is a strong bike.

What I liked about Fullsac's xpipe is you keep the original look. Because you use your stock heat shields. My bike is a sleeper, cause unless you look behind the heat shields you can't tell. It does sound different with the cams at idle, but not bad. I have a buddy with a 2011 limited and I spanked him so bad, he ordered the same set up and we are doing his bike next week. We are also changing his front belt sprocket down 2 teeth and a shorter belt. Fullsac offers this also. I'll let ya know how this works. I may end up doing mine too.

The ACR's (automatic compression releases) are a bonus for you. I had to install them in my 2008 Street glide. If you do the cams and head gaskets, you are raising the compression, thus without ACR's, you are going to create a starting issue.

You might want to reconsider the thunderheader........pretty noisy, unless you like that!
My 103 has the Fullsac treatment minus the cams, I'm pretty happy just the way it is! Going to do the rear belt/pulley change before next summer, just so I can pull my trailer easier.

Any thoughts using the S&S 640G on the 110 with some head work and bump in compression.? I know a few using this cam in the 113 and 120 inch motors, getting some very good TQ/HP numbers, gas milage and awesome run-ability. No personal experience but im thinking about it.  :nixweiss:

Nope
This cam is on the other side of the spectrum from the others.
Overcammed unless you are drag racing and then 11.5/1+ compression and race gas would be in order.
What do you want from the motor, HP and TQ and how much load do you carry and how do you ride?

i disagree with you, sort of anyway. i have a friend with a 120 running this cam in a 06 Dyna pulling around 128hp/130tq. Compression is 10.5:1 (Charlie's Heads) on pump gas. This motor runs smooth as silk, very quite top end, no pinging, (pings a little on hot days) and the idle is smooth and manageable at low RPM's. This is one of those bikes, when you hear it running, you just gotta have it  :2vrolijk_21:.. "Of course" the 120 is out of my ball park, so it would be nice transforming a 110 to run that well.

Now on the near same token, another guy in our riding group is running a Leinweber T9, 11:1 compression  in the same motor, and its a 'handfull at low RPM's especially sitting at stop lights, defiantly a cam that needs to be reved to stay happy. I dont know the characteristics between these two cams, buy im told they both nearly have the same lift.. I think there is a lot to be said on tuning and valve timing which is way over my head just mentioning...All i can say, Charlie was able to make a 640G run GREAT at 10.5:1 on pump gas  :nixweiss:
