Battery Access, what a PITA!
« on: March 27, 2006, 10:22:06 AM »

So I bought some gerbings (gloves and Jacket liner) and also wanted to install the tender harness.  I removed the seat, a PITA itself and then I get to look at the battery...what a mess!  I could not even back out the negative bolt due to the plastic wiring harness protector right in front of it.

Finally managed to get it installed but it was driving me insane!

And lastly, the battery bolts are not even SAE, they are metric 10mm.

Batteries have been 10mm as long as I can remember. The 06  bikes with the plastic wiring channel are a PIA to get to the battery cables. I found that its best to remove the T40 torx bolt holding the battery down. You can then lift the battery a bit to gain access to the terminals.

So you put 2 different harnesses on it??  You can just use the Coax type Gerbing harness and get an adapter to go from the 2-flat to the Coax, most HD stores carry em, I think Gerbing sells em also.  A little less wiring anyways.  It's not their intended purpose, so don't expect the parts guy to know what your talking about, they are usually hanging around the heated gear, run about $7.

Something I've been kicking around would help with the wiring of various accessories.

I know...it just added to the frustration...3/8 - nope...7/16 - nope .... better try metric.

So does the tool kit even have a 10mm?  I have not opened it yet.

Curious about the battery tender connection. Mine had a harness already on the bike exiting from the battery area on the right side of the bike just behind the engine. It's physically bigger than the battery tender connector (wider) but the pins line up just fine and plugs right in. Anyone else have that or did I luck out somehow??? Maybe it was dealer installed but I didn't ask for it... Curious.
Two dealers I visit regularly have them already installed on the bikes in the showroom (not the one I bought the SEEG from, however).  The reason it is slightly bigger than the connector on your charger is that it is a universal harness that will fit more than one version of H-D chargers.    http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442206167&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302290271&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302290271&bmUID=1143481227499&bmLocale=en_US

My finger tips were sore also from squeezing on the battery multiple times to get it out, only to let it drop back in.

Put a loop of plastic strapping tape - the kind that secures stuff from mail order places - under the battery and make a loop front and back - voila - easy to lift battery when you want.

Cheers

I feel for you put power leads on at the wifes insisting the other day and the new plastic ducts make it a PITA especially if you have big hands.
