Inner Fairing replacement
« on: December 15, 2010, 11:19:29 AM »

Hi and the very best during this Holiday Season to Everyone,

I have just purchased a new inner fairing for my wife's '06 Ultra and was thinking of attempting to replace it myself rather than having the dealership do it.
Lord knows I have time, with all the snow we now have we won't be riding for a bit.

I have removed the outer fairing numerous times without any difficulties.  But was told the inner in a whole lot more challenging with dismantling everything.  :nervous:

Just wondering how difficult it can be?  :nixweiss:

The advise from those who have succeeded with this operation would be greatly appreciated.  BTW, I'm reusing the same inner fairing cap.

I was told that (for an inexperienced person) the re & re should take 5 to 6 hours.

Wondering what is the most challenging part???

Thanks very much for your assistance in advance.  :2vrolijk_21:

The hardest part is removing and replacing the ignition switch, need a service manual to perform this or Houdini skills.  If I am not mistaken, you must remove the cap to remove the inner fairing. After that everything else is plug and play, but I would reccomend taking a picture before removing any instruments for wire placement.  The next problem is removing and replacing the inner fairing without scratching it. If you are mechanically inclined you will be able to do this and you will be proud when finished.

I did mine with a friend.... It's a pretty big job,,   Don't let anyone tell you different,  And we have done them before,, I think you should have someone nearby with some experience with this one.  Gauges, radio, cluch line, brakeline, hand controls,,,  should I keep going?? There is a lot. :o

I remember seeing a good video on youtube about removing the iginition switch. You can do this just take your time and mark all of your connectors.

Take your time and I believe you'll do just fine....

Tag every wire, you may think it's a PIA but it will be worth it especially if you take a night off  :2vrolijk_21:

I was contemplating the same thing in January 2010.  I had just purchased a painted inner fairing and all new gauges for my 09 Ultra.  I discussed it with the technician, and he said that it would cost about $125.00 to have them do it.  They were also taking responsibility for not scratching the paint on the new fairing or anything else for that matter.  With the clutch cable, ignition switch, and everything else in there I felt the $125.00 was a bargain.  They did the work and no hassle's for me.  If your like me, there are always one or two things that end up making a good idea go bad.  It was worth the $125 for me.

Check-out this link for step-by-step with pictures:

http://www.hdforums.com/forum/touring-models/575814-inner-fairing-removal-step-by-step-w-pics.html

Here's the link to the video of the ignition switch removal:

I've done two inner fairing replacements on my '04 EG and it's tedious but not difficult.  I used the detailed instructions in the HD Service Manual prior to the posting of the above link and had no problems.  A couple of suggestions:  (1)  there are two small brass ferrules (p/n 56508-76) that secure the throttle and idle cables in the right hand grip which are easily lost when the cables are freed from the grip, so purchase a couple (they're cheap) to have on hand as a form of job interruption insurance; and, (2) exercise care when reassembling the switch housings since it's easy to pinch a wire and create a short.

Good luck with your project.

Carl

Thanks to everyone for your great input... Very helpful.

Special thanks to Carl for his great step-by-step instructions with photos... Looking forward to your video.

I will have to reread all the posts and study the instructions closer prior to deciding if this re & re job is for me.

Thanks again to everyone for your assistance.

Take care,
Mike

Thanks Carl.

That's a great video and will sure help me get started... I was told that removing the ignition was one of the most difficult things and that video sure makes it look like a snap!

Take care,

Mike

Everyone has given you good advice.  To me, the final removal of the inner fairing and the reinstall was the hardest as the metal msupport brackets flop around like a wounded duck-an extra set of hands are helpful then.
I also left all the gauges installed and removed them when the fairing was off and then switched to the new fairing for reinstall.
Cover tank, fender, and lowers well.
Clutch cable is easy to unhook, hydraulic clutch-bleeding and fluid involved.

($125.00 labor was a real good price).

Good luck-inner fairing is one of the best cosmetic things you can do-another item that should be standard on all bikes.      :soapbox:

Yep...$125 is a great deal! If my bike was anything but black, I'd be changing the inner fairing too.Not enough bang for the buck on a black bike.
