HD denying warranty claims if using Amsoil?
« on: December 15, 2010, 03:33:39 PM »

Just caught wind of this and dont know how true it is...

Heard from a parts guy that a recent engine warrant claim was denied because HD indicated AMSOIL is not on its list of "approved" oils.

Now... its sounds like BS to me, but if the lubricant meets all of HD's specifications then how can they deny claim?

They can't.  If Amsoil meets/exceeds Harley's specs then they have to honor it.  According to Amsoil's site - they exceed all required specs.  Sounds like BS to me.

Looks like Amsoil has addressed this issue in the past...

Special Letter From AMSOIL To Your Car, Truck, Motorcycle, Boat, Snowmobile, Small Engine, etc.. Dealership:

Dear, Mr. Service Manager (actual name you supply will be put here),

It has come to our attention that you (or employee's name) have been informing our mutual customers that the use of AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils voids your manufacturers' warranty. This claim is not true. Please review the following facts about warranties and AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils......

I just had some warranty work done on my bike under the ESP and I made certain they knew I had amsoil in the bike so they didn't topp it off with Syn3. I had no problems at all getting the claim okay'd.

Yeah.. I was around when HD first claimed that the synthetic oils were too slippery not allowing roller bearings to roll, thus causing flat spots.... bunch of crap....

Its just interesting that this comes full circle about once every ten years.

I've never had an issue myself... and I bring the dealership my own oil and EaO filters.

Once they installed Syn3 (new tech) even though oil and filter were in the saddlebag... The service manager calle d me later that afternoon and asked if it was OK, and I told him I did note a noisier engine with the Syn3 (reason I switched to Amsoil to begin with). They offered to change the oil again (and eat the labor) to keep me happy.... I told them I'd ride it for 1K then dump the oil and go back to Amsoil...

I change oil every 2500 miles anyway... so its not like was really gonna hurt anything... but I did notice more oil and more heat in that 1K time.

every 5K itr sees the dealership.. I do the in-between service.

That's the key Larry. Keeping up with the services.  They can refuse warranty work if you can't prove you kept up with the services.  I take Mobil one down to my dealer for both my bikes and my dealer never bats an eye for warranty work.

Yeah, it's BS. Ask them if they've ever heard of the The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. That'll shut them up pretty quick if they have. They have to honor their warranty if you use any aftermarket part or oil that meets or exceeds the manufactures requirements.

That is bogus....my dealer sells Amsoil as well as Syn3.  Amsoil syn meets the oil spec requirements, so it's not an issue.

I'm guessing HD didn't deny a warrant claim because of AMSOIL, but rather a parts guy is talking out his a$$...  It sounds like BS to me also...

I was told that if I change my own oil it would void the warranty.
