I was told that if I change my own oil it would void the warranty.

Scott, I know a guy can't help but giggle a bit when this stupidity is heard over and over again.  For literally what has been decades.  Still someone drinks the kool aid offered by some asinine mercenary dealership rep and doesn't question.  Even a little.

Most question (I guess).  Fortunately such ridiculous nonsense gets debunked quickly and repeatedly in communities like this.  But still.....

I understand that someone can't know what they don't know.  But the ability to reason just a little and question just a bit when things don't pass the sniff test of the obvious facts on the ground as they can be easily watched around you should be a requirement in the motorcycle endorsement on the driver's license.  If someone is too damn dumb to think critically, just a little, they don't get to ride.

Either that or I could just be in a bad mood this morning....

Not a stupid question really. W/ all the myths that get intermingled w/ the warped harley lore it's kind of amazing we don't have more of it. However, any dealer personnel that would perpetuate something like this ought to be taken out and beat senseless and then referred to a big red dealership or such.

That was exactly the point... I'm merely trying to determine IF this is coming full circle yet again, and the reason for it.

The magnussen-moss warranty act covers this, as does Amsoil meeting the MFGs specs. AMSOIL does claim to double the service interval... I dont buy that.... the oil is cheap enough to replace under the MFGs schedule.

This situation did not occur at the dealership I do business with.... and as there are only 3 HD dealerships on Island, and 6 total in the state, it should not be to hard to determine which dealership it was...

Warranty claims being denied seemed to have one common theme.........  Stupid Dealers and stupid employee's !!!!  With dealerships closing weekly you would think they would be kissing a customers A$$ to encourage us to spend are hard earned cash at their dealership.

Do not know if it is stupid dealers and employees or not.  YO would not believe the number of owners who are clueless about their rights etc.  I know several guys who inssit on taking their bikes back to dealers for service because they have been told warranty will be voided if they do not.  NO amount of telling them and showing them in writting etc will convince them.  You just cannot fix stupid

On another note it reminds me of John Gishams book/movie "The Rain Maker"  Big insurance company's policy was to deny claims the 1st and second time.  Tried to wear the claimant down so they quit trying to get their money.  That type of thinggoes  on more than we realize.  Some companies just work that way not only with their customers but also their employees.

Good post...

Insurance comapnies do exactly that... My Dually was hit while parked by a DUI driver, and while the insurance company accepted responsibilty for the claim, they started making all kinds of reasons to not pay appraised value.

First, it was the "lowball", then we moved on to excuses why they couldnt pay appraised value, no loaner (due to cost to them)etc etc etc...

I got fed up... the truck was down for 2-1/2 months waiting for a settlement. The fix was to do the basic repairs out of pocket to make the vehicle operable, and THEN continue the battle.... Me without a truck is like me without my scoot... it dont work that way!

Insurance tried to get nasty and say they were going to total the truck (too late, I fixed it and it was operable) and pay me a lowball price... NOT!

In the end: I got appraised value, kept the truck, and maintained clear title... took almost 6 months.... screw them.

Warranty claims are very similar, much like insurance provided by the MFG or by the ESP provider.

I seen one of these lawsuits it was pretty funny.  A manufacturer said our warranty was voided because we used a different oil in it, so instead of them fixing the machine they replaced it with a brand-new one after the oil company got done with them.

We just got some new equipment at work, built in Europe and supposedly requires a "special" grease... I'm still trying to find the MFGs specifications so we can look elsewhere... this chit is EXPENSIVE!

More crap....I just had my lifters replaced under ESP and I use Amsoil.  Dealer didn't even ask what I use but they know I change my own oil/filters.

if they specify a special brand lubricant, grease, oil, then they half to supply it.  ingersollrand supply the oil through the Warranty On their air compressors because of that.

Must be true, a friend of my brother in law had his crank bearings skate from using too much Amsoil. :P

I forgot to mention that @ 48000 my jaundiced bearing and clutch cage bearing race started walking. ESP replaced entire clutch Assembly, primary chain, tensioners and compensator because of all the metal residue in the primary oil.  Have ran Redline MTL/Primary oil from day one.

I just think some people/dealers do things just to screw with people and see what they can get by with.  Learned long time ago that if you do not understand how something works, you better learn fast because it is up to you to keep dishonest people honest. Yo never have to worry about the honest ones.
