Finish Quality
« on: December 22, 2010, 10:15:45 AM »

Anyone have issues with the finish on their 2011 CVO's ?  I picked up my FLHTCUSE6 on Sunday and I have to say I was a bit surprised by little imperfections from the factory.....

The CVO emblem on the fuel door looked like it had been kicked across the floor.
There were scratches all along the tank where the center dash meets the tank.
There was a haze in one of the saddlebag lids that when you wiped it away, came back ! Strangest thing I ever saw !
One of the muffler heat shields has many scratches in the chrome.
The winshield trim piece has a haze on it that wont come out.

There are others and they are all minor, but the good news is the dealer is sending a detailer to my house to do the whole bike ! And whatever they can not correct, the dealer will replace.  Now that's service !

I had been through the York plant tour and had seen the special piece done on the Discovery Channel (I think it was there) where they show you how the CVO's are completely hand built with every attention paid to quality and detail. I've since heard a rumor that the CVO's are no longer built that way, and are just part of the the normal production line. Anyone else hear that ?

Yes, but that does not excuse such poor quality.  Even regular bikes should not have these problems.

Couldn't agree with you more ultrafxr !   These are their top of the line bikes !  I don't understand how this stuff gets past inspection.   :nixweiss:

I agree 100%!!!! It seems that since they do not build as many CVO's when one comes down the line they just throw it together......Still no excuse though.....

Hey, according to others on the site, it's the part suppliers and managements fault!
Didn't you know they eliminated final inspection to save money?
I think the dealer is as much at fault as the manufacture. They
should refuse to deliver a bike with that many things wrong,
I know I would.

Just my thoughts!

Ahh, the benefits of a short memory.  Now the problems are the result of moving the assembly process from a converted hallway/conference room to the real assembly line with proper tooling.  I don't think so.  Go back a few years and read all the posts from folks concerning all the paint issues, the loose fastener issues, the improperly adjusted components issues, etc.  All of that was with the "hand built" assembly process.

My experiences were that my regular Harley came though in 1999 with perfect cosmetics and no parts falling off or maladjusted.  My '05 CVO on the other hand came with more cosmetic and functional defects than any new vehicle I've ever purchased in my life.

Face it, the quality issues are much more deeply rooted than just where they are bolted together.  It's a total shame that this sort of stuff gets out the door even on the regular models, and there is no excuse for H-D letting this stuff out the door on their overpriced flagship models.  And I would also question why any dealer would deliver such a product to his customer without first finding and fixing all of these obvious issues first.  The entire quality system for Harley, from procurement to manufacturing to assembly to the dealers seems to be broken.  Damned shame.

It's a new cost-cutting move by the MoCo called the Customer QC Program.  Let the customer find the problems and then we'll fix them after the sale rather then spend the money for those "high-priced QC experts" on the line.  :huepfenlol2:  To be honest though, my first CVO that had any loose parts or paint problems came from the main assembly line. My 11 is the first bike I had to replace painted parts because of a lack of QC by the painter or the MoCo.  I also found that the front bolt to my left floorboard was about two turns from falling out.  It had been started but not even screwed all the way in.  Never had those issues on my other two that were build on the CVO line out back.   I think it's just pi$$-poor QC all the way around now, no matter where it's assembled.  JMO.

I personally believe that it is more of the line workers then it is management. I believe the union people are pissed because Harley demanded a cut from them or they were moving.  I've seen more issues with the CVO that I have with the stock bikes.  I think it is the workers that are mad at the consumer that can afford the CVO. All these repairs come out of management's pocket not the workers.  Because if they really cared about their job they would not let them go out with like wrong side cover, rear fender, front fender. scratched up paint jobs. some of these damages looks deliberate, not accidental.  of course this is my 2 cents.

Here are some of the damages on my 2011 bike.

inner fairing scratched up
CVO emblem on gas tank damage
wheel weights falling off
wrong saddlebags locks.
neck daring loose.

I hope this doesn't offend anyone but maybe it's time that H-D adopts the Japanese quality philosophy i.e. customer satisfaction, etc.

That many issues just says to look the bike over well before taking delivery - do not accept the bike and tell them don't try to cash the check until all items are brought up to standard.

Again I say...........WhereTF is the dealer???? I would refuse the bike, look at the dealer, and say
"I want my money back" HE is also the problem! I brought it to the site months ago, about
a new Ultra RG with a whitewall and blackwall tire on a bike on the showroom floor,
the stealer didn't even see that! I guess it's all about MONEY! We just don't get it right,
I think the greed factor rules in America?

Ah yes I remember that WW/BW tire post. I don't think we should have to go over a new bike with a fine tooth comb, BUT it looks like we are going to have to.
