Keep or sell take off parts?
« on: December 23, 2010, 09:54:20 PM »

On previous bikes, I usually sold the takeoff parts, because I don't want stuff sitting around the garage just so I can pass them down to the eventual next owner, plus selling them offsets some of the cost of the new parts.

But, I think it's different with the 2009 SERG- really, it was the only year this bike came with a lot of the parts it came with (the 2000, 2001, and 2011's are not exactly the same bike), so I wonder if I should hang on to the stuff?

It hasn't been an issue so far- all I have for take off parts is the stock Ventilator A/C, catless headpipe, windshield, seat, and I already sold the stock rear shocks, as they aren't unique to just the SERG.

But, come spring time, the stock handlebars, and possibly the stock cans with Fullsac baffles might also be taking up space on the shelf.....

So what does everyone think? Since our CVO's do have a lot of one-off parts, is it better to hang on to the stuff, or sell it?

I definitely hang on to mine. Some people believe a bike or specialty car is worth more if you have all the original parts. I'm one of them. Look at what an old muscle goes for if it has all the original parts. Just my opinion though.

I'm sure there will be lots of opinions on this but I think if you don't need the space or money then hang on to the parts.
You can never tell when a government will clamp down on pollution or noise regulations and you need to put the stock parts back on.
It could also help in resale of your bike at a later date if a "collector/restorer" is interested in buying your bike.

On the other hand if you have the mentality of wanting to just ride and modify the bike to your tastes then don't worry about resale and stocking old parts. Then it's not what you bought the bike for anyway. It is a tool for your use and not an investment.

Just my .02 though.

Well in the past with my last two RKC I kept some and sold some parts, seats, leather tour pack and stuff. BUT with my 09SEUC any OEM parts that are not being used or have been replaced due to looks or performance have been cleaned, bagged and tagged and placed in a special CVO plastic parts container. Just in case they are needed or I decide to sell it (don't see that happening) but you never know chit happens. My wife says/bitches I never throw away anything! Yes! OK! shes right, but I'm getting better, really! So yes no question I would keep all OEM CVO parts. My .02.

You could always just build another stock bike with them!

I have always been in the camp of keeping the parts for the "just in case" moments that may occur.  I recently sold my 2004 Road King of which I had heavily modified but kept all of the stock parts.  I ended up giving boxes of parts to the new owner just because I didn't want them all taking up space anymore and I didn't want to pack them up the next time I move, again.  Now, after all these years of riding bikes, I still have LOTS of take-off parts from SEVERAL different bikes that I previously owned.  Point of this rant, is that, the "just in case" moment has never occured with me and I have sold "by owner" all of my bikes in the past and my buyers have never used the availability of stock parts as a condition of the sale.  Just my .02

Good Luck.

When I purchased my new '08 SERK Annie I started to change out things and add additional items.

When I traded it in on my '09 SERG O/B, they told me that the bike was not worth any more with the items than if it were showroom stock.

One night and all the original parts were put back on and all the additional items removed as well.  I ended up selling my optional items for about $1,500.00.

Well worth keeping the take off items in my book.

By the way, right now from my 11 SESG, I have the saddlebag latch covers, front and rear wheels, stock exhaust, stock shift lever, windshield, the smart siren, inner primary cover, etc.  I have no idea what to do with these if I keep them other than take tylenol for the headache they cause in finding yet more storage space.

I hear you Dan, that is why I never trade anything.  Always sell all vehicles (motorcycles or autos) on my own to private parties.

I agree with David...  even if you figure your never going to sell the bike anyway,  your Grandkids one day may be saying " we could have won best in show vintage" if Grampa would have kept all the origional parts  :orange: :drink: :nixweiss:

:bananarock:Get rid of the crap and go buy yourself some goodies.  I hate junk laying around, I sold the stuff that was worth the effort, and gave the rest of it away to my tech. at the HD dealer which makes way for a great relationship!

Thanks for all the input.

I would never trade in a bike to a dealer either- I have a toilet if I want to flush my money away.

I think I'll keep doing what I'm doing- sell off any generic parts, like the rear shocks, and probably hang on to CVO specific stuff.
