What do you think about using this oil, Exxon Elite.  I use it in my plane which is counter piston and air cooled.  I know that these engines get alot hotter than our bike.   :confused5:

Aviation oils like Aeroshell, Phillips, Exxon Elite, etc. are designed specifically for use in aircraft engines.  These engines usually operate under continuous RPM operation,  alot like your air cooled lawn mower once the engine is started it is operated within a narrow power band.  Unlike automotive or motorcycle oils which operate under a broad range of power settings.  I do use aeroshell 15w50 in my John Deere mower and have no problems but once the motor is started it runs at a continous RPM until I'm finished mowing.  Just like your airplane, once you are in flight the RPM range is rather narrow until you are preparing to land.  Your car and motorcycle engines vary from idle speed at stoplights to high speed (RPM) on the highways.  Aviation engine oils are really not going to save you any $$$ either as they cost about the same as a synthetic and If I'm not mistaken are mostly semisynthetic.  Also,  You might want to be sure of approval ratings as it could become an issue if warranty claims get involved.

How about one of those hybrid models that's a car and a plane?  Do you have to change the oil when you switch modes? ;D

Seriously, why can't folks just accept the fact that the best approach is to follow the manufacturer's recommendations as to type and rating (not necessarily brand, though).  I stopped counting many years ago just how many people I heard talking about running racing oil in their street engines, or aviation fuel in their street bikes or cars, or lord knows what other goofy combinations they could dream up.  If anyone really thinks they know more than the chemists and engineers at the oil companies and the auto/motorcycle companies, then by all means they should do their thing.  Maybe that recycled frying oil from McDonalds really is the hot ticket.  Let us know how it works out.

Wouldn't this require some type of warning decal for riders that would follow you??

Why bother trying to reinvent the wheel. HD specifys the viscosity and oil requirement. Follow that. Being that diesel oils now are all going to low emmissions I would avoid those and just use VTwin oil from one of the many good manufacturers. Really with me the buying decision often times factors in what can I get readily. Walmart being a prefered supplier.

The difference is implied in the names of the products.  SYN 3 is a full synthetic, the other product is a "blend" of syn and dino oils at a lower price.

And yes, this subject has been beaten to death and there is another current thread running on the same subject, plus untold numbers of threads from the distant as well as near past.  It all boils down to ignoring the advertising hype and finding a product that meets or exceeds all manufacturer requirements for your vehicle and is readily available at a reasonable price.  There is no single "best" motor oil.  Each product has better results in some tests and worse results in others, and this is just basic economics.  The products are formulated to meet specifications AT A VIABLE COST.  If money were no object, I suppose someone could formulate a product that would come in first in all tests.  I'm not so sure there would be much of a mass market for $40 per quart motor oil, however, even if a few CVO types would probably buy it so they could brag about how much they wasted spent.

The problems folks have been experiencing with their Harley engines aren't going to be "fixed" by using a certain brand of oil.  No motor oil currently on the market can turn a sow's ear into a silk purse.
