There is another option here, I put stuff from 3M on my saddle bag tops that you cant see and it protects them from my wifes zipper from her jacket it works great. There are differant thicknesses you can buy. Its a rock guard it will also make some scratches disappear once you put it on. I am going to put some on the sides of my tank this summer.

I do know when California EPA change the rules, if you wanted good clearcoat you had to go to Nevada a by the stuff. the stuff you bought in California would not harden and or last. it might be different now, but a few years ago it was that way.

I had the protective film installed by a shop here in Vegas and they did a excellent job. The entire fairings, lowers, side covers, saddlebags, and the front of the tank as well as where your legs touch the tank. Non worries now and it always looks like I just waxed it

How did the motorcycle armor work on your tank?  Can you see lines after install?  Was it easy?

This wasn't a problem in the 60's and 70's. All the bikes had tank pads!
