New Dunlop tire?
« on: January 21, 2011, 11:49:47 AM »

Any feedback on the new Dunlop American Elite tire? I just mounted one on the rear of a 2010 103. I'm told it is a copy of the Elite 3 used on pre 09 bikes.

HOGMIKE

I will be looking forward to how you like the American Elite.
I am planning on a pair for my next set of tires.

The only sizes they have now is replacement for the '09's and above.  The website said they will have more sizes toward the end of 2010, but I've seen nothing further. Sure would love to upgrade my current std Elite 3's to the American Elites.  These E3's have no siping in the center of the track and get a bit slick in the rain. However, they do last a long time.

I'm hoping the American Elites will have a little better wet traction, while maintaining the same life and dry performance. Should be a great tire.

HOGMIKE, I also plan on using the American Elite tires. I talked to a Dunlop Rep and he said they were a good choice . The Dunlop catalogue says they were designed, tested, and manufactured in the United States. The rear tire has the Multi-Tread compound incorporating a long wearing center compound. I haven't checked the price at my Local HD dealer, but in the J&P catalogue the fronts are $35.00 cheaper and the rears are $50.00 cheaper then the D408/D407 tires. I am hoping to get some feed back on these tires from members of the site regarding mileage and cornering. CAHDBIKER

Update:
My new rear American Elite seems to be fine. I notice no difference in handling or ride quality over the OEM tire.
Only have about 1000 miles on it so far, so, we'll see if it lasts through the summer. My OEM tires lasted about 18000 miles, front and rear so we'll see.

HOGMIKE, what air pressure were you using on your OEM tires and what air pressure are you using on your new Elite? Thanks in Advance. CAHDBIKER

Sorry for the delay, I wanted to get some miles on the new tire. I'm running 41lbs on the rear now, seems to handle just fine through the twisties. So far, no issues. We'll see how long it lasts!

They look good.  I'd be happy if I could get a rear tire to last more than 8 or 9,000 miles.  How the heck did you get 18,000out of a rear?

Keep us posted!

Got 18k out of the rear (and front) on my '09. Stock tires. The front was upgraded because of excessive cupping.
On the '10 the tires are the "new and improved" style, still getting about 18K on the front/rear.
That's 2-up pulling a trailer!
I guess I ride pretty conservative when the BSR is along??!!?

As an FYI, I spoke with a real turd from Dunlop at the Chicago IMS show.  I asked what new sizes came out in Fall of 2010 for the American Elites, beyond the single front and rear for the 2009+. He there wasn't any and the website doesn't say that. Huh?  Sites says specifically, "More sizes to fit other Harley-Davidson models will become available later in 2010", under the last bullet point.

http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/tirecatalog_tire.asp?id=109

So I said fine, when ARE you guys coming out with new sizes, and what sizes might they be?  That I was specifically looking for sizes that will fit the 2008 and earlier Ultra's. The blockhead said, there were not enough motorcycles built that use those sizes to justify making the American Elites for them.  WHAT???  He said we have the 402's which are made for those years. Further, that they will only be making American Elites in sizes for new bikes.

I then mentioned that I was running the Elite 3's on my 2006 SEUC, and that I was happy with the life and all around performance, but they were a bit slick in the rain. As such, I was really hoping they would come out with an American Elite version that would fit. He then said that the E3 was not designed for a Harley, and it was dangerous to use them on anything other than a Gold Wing, and I should take them off immediately.

I couldn't take it any longer, told him I'd got to Metzler instead, and just walked away, but seems odd that they aren't working on any variations of the American Elite for older bikes? I just hope this was just some retard they dragged along to lug their booth crap.
