Lift question: Do you use your rear drop out on your Handy SAM?
« on: February 10, 2011, 04:42:37 PM »

There is a real clean SAM I can pick up for $750 used, I have the standard Handly lift that I can probably sell for $6-700. Question is, do you like the rear drop out? Normally I pull the rear axle and then jack the bike to remove the rear tire. How do you do it with the rear drop out? Jack bike to take weight off rear wheel, remove axle, then lift up on rear tire and pull removable plate with the other hand? Almost seems like more work to me?

I can't see how the drop outs would work myself. I have a regular Handy. I just take the weight off the axle and slide it out, then jack the bike up enough to slide the tire and wheel out. Looks to me like the drop would be harder because you couldn't hold everything.......Just my thoughts.... :nixweiss:

Perfect timing as I just did this today. I have a Handy BOB 1500. I jack the bike up enough to get the rear tire off the bench and then block the frame and remove the jack. I then pull the red panel out from under the rear wheel, unhook the shocks which lets the swingarm drop below bench level and allows access to the axle without having to remove your mufflers. Once the axle is pulled, I slip the belt off and gently let the wheel drop to the floor. So, the answer to your question is a most difinite YES and I would hate to try doing it WITHOUT that removable panel. Must be a royal ass pain.

Spiderman,

Thanks for your input!! Let me ask though, what do you do with the rear wheel once you pull the rear axle? It isn't sitting on anything right? so it is basically hanging by the belt until you get the belt off? Just have trouble picturing this being easier. With the standard lift the wheel is sitting on the lift table, then you slowly raise the center jack, removing the belt, and then raise it up high enough to get the tire out. That is the only funky part, you have to raise the rear of the bike pretty high.

Never had a table light with the drop out plate.  But have wondered not what the removal would be like but the reinstallation.

I can put a jack under the bike and raise it enough to get the tire out.  Always unhook the shocks to let the axle clear the muffler so don't have to screw with exhaust.  But can raise the bike enough to bring the tire out without the drop out on the table lift.  It's not a pain in the ass at all.  Can't say if it's more difficult than would be with the drop out as don't have the comparison available.

What I've wondered about is reinstallation though.  I like being able to set the tire back up in place then not have to hold or balance anything while slowly lowering the bike back down to a position to start putting pieces back together.  With the drop out plate removed I think it would be a pain to try to hold things in position.

Then again it probably wouldn't.  Would probably slide the plate back in the table lift and put the tire back on the same way I do it now.  So..... never mind  ::) .

Since the lift raises and lowers you lower the lift down til the wheel is touching the garage floor, slip off the belt and roll the tire away from the bench. Then you raise the lift to one of the locking notches and leave it there until you get your new tire on your wheel. Time to put the whole thing back on again ? Do the same. Adjust the bench to where you can slip the belt over the pulley, adjust the bench to where you can align the axle, adjusters and rear brake, slip the axle through and then put the bench up in the air to a nice comfortable level. One of the real positives in having an expensive bench like a Handy or even one of the less expensive clones is being able to turn two man chores into one man chores by raising and lowering the bench. In truth, I had my bench for a few months before it dawned on me that I was muscling things that I could use the bench to do.
