K&N Filter 09 CVO RG
« on: February 11, 2011, 06:07:03 PM »

Got the new K&N filter today, it does NOT fit the outer chrome air filter housing. When you try to tighten the center bolt it compresses the filter on both ends as the rubber outer gasket is larger than the chrome housing. I first tried to reshape the ends with an aggressive sanding block but that would take forever. Very carefully used the bench grinder, little at a time until the filter slipped into the chrome housing without effort. Finish sanded the outer edge with a old piece of 400 and if looks like it came that way. If you try to tighten the cover without doing this the filter will collapse.

What was K&N's response? :nixweiss:

Bought it from HD, and I only assume it came from K&N, probably shouldn't have used K&N in the description. I am sure dealer would have replaced it, I wasn't complaining, just advising others to check before tightening it down and damaging it. Once I figured it out, only took about 5 minutes to make it fit. I gain alot more enjoyment from making it fit than contacting the manufacturer.

Dude, do you really think I stopped working, cleaned my hands, went inside and got a camera then took pictures with one hand while I worked a bench grinder with the other? Sorry but that will never happen. Not to mention that when you try to upload photos to this website they are the size of a giraffe as the site does not automatically resize.  Once again, sorry, but no photos.

HD parts used to offer a thick gasket that had peel off sticky on one side...you could stick that to the filter cover and it would compress in the right places to make a good fit.  The gasket is/was about 1/2" thick and made of a material like a dense sponge.  Owners of the '06 SEUC had the same problem with the filter cover.  Blue loctite on the center bolt, and it fit right up.  I'm not sure if you're having the same issue, but if so, this is an alternative that works well.

Can anyone actually verify that this new Harley part number is in fact a K&N part?  Or is it one of Harley's Chinese "equivalent" parts?

K&N doesn't list this part on their site, so I'm assuming they: (1) are very slow updating the catalog, (2) they didn't actually make this part, or (3) there is some kind of exclusive deal with H-D to market the parts only through Harley.  It will probably take awhile for this to sort out, so in the meantime I'm going with the conspiracy theory.  If the part will only be sold through Harley, you can safely figure on paying about $15 to $20 more than you would if it was available through the regular aftermarket stores.

I called K&N, last week, they told me filter is only available through Harley. Rep looked it up with Harley part number, that leads me to believe it is a K&N part number.

Got the original Harley plain brown box out and read the label, it says K&N on it.
Sure Harley would not lie.
