08 SERK won't crank
« on: February 18, 2011, 12:53:09 AM »

So the weather here in central MO just got nice enough to pull my bike out.  Took the battery off the battery tender, dropped it in and hooked everything up, turned the key, heard the fuel pump prime like it should, pushed the start switch and only heard a click come from the relay.  No starter crank, no rumble.  WTF?  I took the battery back out, cleaned up the cables and battery posts, checked all the fuses (all were fine), plugged everything back in and still nothing but a click in the relay.  Swapped the brake and start relay(they have the same number on the end) and same thing, only a click in the relay.

Any suggestions?  Is there something obvious I'm missing?  The batter is only 6 months old and powers the lights and everything up fine but nothing turns over.

Thanks,
Mike

Even though the battery should be good I would start there first. Do you have a volt meter? If so monitor the voltage when you try to crank the bike over to see how far it drops. The battery should be at 12+ volts at rest. And will drop down when cranking. If it drops too low it will just click the solenoid but not have enough amperage to crank the starter motor.

I'm going to be checking mine soon, at what voltage drop should we be concerned?  Or what is the normal voltage drop while starting?

Thanks

If you apply a load to the battery equal to 50% of the cold cranking amperage rating for 15 seconds, the voltage should not drop below 9.6 volts.  That is the official specification using a load tester, but you can figure it's a pretty close approximation if you just use the starter and engine to provide the load.

I get no voltage drop at all.  Is the start relay supposed to click when you hit the start button?  If it's not that, what next, the starter solenoid?

You can make a jumper wire and feed the solenoid coil terminal with 12V positive the starter should rotate. Make sure your in neutral pull in the clutch.
